Come let us spark your creativity and help you enjoy time spent with your family hassle free. I RESOLVE TO ….. BE MORE SELF-RELIANT

The economic situation in the USA (indeed the whole world) has been going downhill ever since 9/11. But since the last half of 2007, it began an accelerated downhill slide. We really don't have much to look forward to in 2012, so we'll be happy if things simply start to level off instead of continuing on our downhill slide.

The last 11 years have now been labeled the “Great Recession,” but many financial experts have declared it really is more like a depression than a recession.

Last month as I passed through Logan, I spotted a bread line. I was so struck at the sight that I stopped to take a picture of it. Unfortunately I didn't stop to take another picture as I passed by the same line an hour later; by then the line was more than twice as long. I realized that we don't have as many bread lines now as during the Great Depression of the 1930s, because we instead have Food Stamps. Today, one in six Americans is on Food Stamps.

In light of the current world situation, I think a fitting New Year's resolution should be to become more self-reliant.

In the 1800s and half-way through the 1900s, almost every homestead had a backyard flock of chickens. Even today, many people are returning to the practice of having a few hens. Many cities and towns are rewriting their ordinances to allow property owners to again raise some chickens.

I've raised a flock of 25 to 30 chickens for the last 20 years. Chickens do more than just give you eggs. Chickens give you manure for your compost pile or garden and flower beds. Chickens will eat all your table scraps, weeds, lawn clippings and other waste. They will also do their part to keep the bug population down. Many times I have even seen them eat mice and even small snakes.

Chickens make good pets. The more you handle them, the tamer they become. Children love to watch and play with chickens.

I won't go so far as to say you can butcher your chickens to eat, because I have tried this. You certainly can try it, but you will be disappointed in the meat, unless you stew it for a long time. Laying hens that are more than two or three months old and raised in the sunshine of Mountain Green will have tough and gamey-tasting meat. They won't taste like the tender and moist chicken we have become accustomed to at the grocery. Those chickens are a special breed that are fed a steroid-laced diet and slaughtered at the ripe old age of 33 days.

A popular way to house chickens nowadays is in a “chicken tractor.” Go to Google Images and enter the words Chicken Tractor and be amazed at the image results! Building your own chicken tractor would make a good late winter and early spring project so you can be ready to buy some little chicks from the farm store in March.

You never know when you might suddenly lose your job, or need to rely more upon your own resources. Real security comes not from how much money and stuff you have, but from how little you actually need. Maybe this year would be a good time to become more self-reliant by planting a garden and raising a small flock of chickens.

Poinsettia Tip Sheet from Kelly Winterton.

Poinsettias are a beautiful, living holiday tradition. The wide range of colors we enjoy are actually not blooms, but bracts; modified leaves that change color. The blooms are the little yellow clusters located in the middle of a group of bracts. Despite modern myth, poinsettias are not poisonous, although some people with latex sensitivity may experience an allergic reaction to the white sap secreted from the stems and leaves. With a little care, you can enjoy your poinsettias through the entire holiday season.

LOCATION

-Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. To keep your poinsettia looking beautiful through the end of the year, place near southern-facing windows, but make sure they are not exposed to direct sun.

-Avoid warm and cold drafts. Do not place near heating vents or close to exterior doors.

-Likes humid conditions. Use a humidifier if possible, otherwise place in a saucer filled with water and a layer of pebbles. Remember to keep the pot above the water level, though.

-Temperatures between 60 and 65 are optimal for poinsettias while blooming. Avoid extreme temperatures; anything above 70 will cause blooming to end early.

WATERING

-You want the soil to dry out between watering, but not to the point where the leaves wilt.

-Do not let the plant sit in excess water for any period of time. Ideally, you would cut a slit in the pot cover and utilize a saucer to catch excess water. Drain the saucer about 1/2 hour after watering. Another method is to remove the pot cover and water the plant in a sink. Replace the pot cover after the excess water has drained.

-Poinsettias do not need fertilizer while in bloom.

RE-BLOOMING

-You can coax your poinsettia to bloom again next holiday season with a little bit of diligence. Starting in late September or early October, place the plant in complete darkness (use a closet, cupboard, or box) for 12 - 14 house each night. Don't forget to bring it out to a bright location during the daytime. You should begin to see the bracts changing color after about 10 weeks.

The Morgan Company of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers will be hosting a bizarre at the DUP museum in Morgan ( 33 N. State St.). Friday November 4th from 3-6 pm and Saturday November 5th from 10 am-2 pm. There will be gently used and homemade items for sale. The proceeds will support the local camps (there are 6 in Morgan). Please come and shop and see some of our Pioneering heritage.

Spotlight

Thank you to our spotlight family, the Umpleby’s!

First off, just to clear things up, our last name is pronounced Um-pl-bee. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, here are some things that may help you get to know us better.

Will and Alison both grew up in Davis County, just south of here. Even though we had many mutual friends, we didn't meet until we both went to the Moab Easter Jeep Safari in 2004 with those mutual friends. We were married just outside of Moab on June 9, 2005 at Dead Horse Point and enjoyed a luxury honeymoon in a tent.

Adventure has been the theme of our relationship ever since the day we met. We have moved 8 times ranging between various locations in the Salt Lake area, to Roosevelt and finally here to Mountain Green. There may have been a few of those moves that involved Alison kicking and screaming. At this point, Alison swears to Will that she will never move again, unless it involves an empty nest and tropical temperatures. Even under those circumstances, there may need to be major bribery involved.

We have two beautiful daughters. Lily is 5 and in kindergarten. Eve is 2. Lily loves kindergarten and Eve dutifully whines at the door until Lily returns home for the day. It's been more of an adjustment for Eve to have her playmate go, than it's been for Lily to fly the nest. Lily and Eve both love to dance and Eve has decided that she will live in dance attire 24/7.

Will works for Stapp Construction by day and helps out all his friends, family and neighbors with jobs on nights and weekends. He is incredibly selfless in helping others. Alison recently began teaching piano lessons. She has loved the chance to get back into her music and enjoy her talents again.

Our little family is so happy to be here. We LOVE Mountain Green and feel very at home here. We hope to enjoy many happy years making lasting friendships in this area while raising our daughters among you.

Graphing the Growing Season

The graph shown here is the culmination of much effort on my part to actually put to paper a picture of what a growing season in Mountain Green really looks like. I hope you'll have interest!

Farmers and horticulturists realize that plants mature on a basis of Accumulated Heat Units, and not by the calendar. For instance, because of our wet and cold spring, our plants refused to grow, even though our calendars were saying it is almost June!

The methodology behind measuring Accumulated Heat Units is that warm season crops like tomatoes, corn and beans do not actively grow below their baseline temperature of 50 degrees. While it is true that they won't die below 50 degrees, they are actually just sitting there in a state of suspended animation. When the temperature warms to above 50, the cells in the plant start to divide and the plant grows toward maturing its crop.

The simplest way to explain Heat Units is that if the average temperature for the day was 60, then the plant accumulated ten Heat Units, because the average temperature of the day exceeded the baseline temperature (which is 50) by ten degrees.

To put my graph to actual use, we can use the example of tomatoes. An Early Girl tomato needs 1500 Accumulated Heat Units in order to ripen its fruit. The Siberian type tomatoes that I grow need only 1100 Heat Units. A running total of Accumulated Heat Units for 2011 shows that we reached the 1100 mark by July 30^th. (I picked my first four ripe tomatoes on July 20^th.) But if you by chance were growing Early Girls, we didn't accumulate the needed 1500 Heat Units until August 20^th. I kept a running total of Accumulated Heat Units, and we accumulated a total of 2055 Heat Units during 2011's growing season.

Another interesting thing about the graph is how it plainly shows our cold spring by flat-lining all through May and into the first week of June. We can also see the warmest two weeks occurred between July 3 to July 16. We can also see that no appreciable growth happened before May 1 or after October 15^th. We can also see that the effective growing season in Mountain Green is between June 1 and October 1.

Betsey Lee Browning will be doing a doll project October 10-14, from 11 am to 4 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday from 3 pm – 9 pm. She needs help dressing the dolls and washing and styling their hair. Bring your children to help with this great cause (no toddlers please). Betsey is also in need of clear plastic bags of any size to put the dolls in.

Book Club: “Between Shades of Gray” by Ruta Sepetys. Hosted this month by Shalece Sanders on Wednesday, October 19 at 8:00 pm.

Spotlight

Thank you to our spotlight family!

We are the Buss Family Ken, Tricia, Connor, Kiley, Brielle and Makenna. We have lived in Mountain Green for over three years. Before moving here we lived in Layton, Pennsylvania, Washington State, Oregon & Salt Lake. For those of you who don't know, we just moved from one house to another here in MG in December (our 14th move). Moving seems to be one of our hobbies, one that I don't care much for. Ken & I met at the University of Utah, he was playing football & I was a cheerleader. I know, cliché but true. I am from North Ogden and Ken is from Wisconsin. We dated 11 months before we eloped to the Salt Lake Temple on a whim........they said it wouldn't last but 17 years later we are still together.
Ken is a Pharmaceutical Rep with Forrest Pharmaceuticals. He is a devout fan of the UTES and his Packers. Being from Wisconsin, he was called to serve an LDS mission to Ogden, UT. He had a wonderful mission and loved it so much he decided to stay. Ken just completed his first half marathon (one I talked him into). Who says large ex-linebackers can't run long distances?
I love being home with my cute kids but also love teaching fitness. I have been a fitness instructor for 10 years. I teach Yoga, Zumba, TRX and toning classes at various locations but my favorite is teaching right here in Mountain Green at Lone Tree Yoga. Nothing is better than working out with great friends and neighbors. In my spare time I read, run & clean my house, however it never seems to get as clean as I would like. Could it be 4 children??
Connor, (almost 12) plays comp soccer & is quite amazing on the pogo stick (isn't that a sport?). From the time he was two has wanted to be a fighter pilot. He loves documentaries of WWII and can't wait to take flight lessons in two years. Kiley (10) dances, sings up a storm and pretty much does and loves all sports. She would love to be a veterinarian one day. Brielle (7) has a fascination with bugs and is a very free spirit. She draws and colors for hours and can't wait to have the official title of "Artist". Easy going Makenna (4), her hobbies include changing her clothes seven times a day, leaving a trail of barbies and bears behind her & just being plain happy.
We love living in this wonderful community and taking advantage of running & biking the rolling hills, skiing the beautiful mountains and tubing the cold rivers. Thanks to all of you who helped with our last move. We couldn't ask to live in a better place.

Article by Kelly Winterton.A Quick and Easy Way to Preserve Your Extra Tomatoes

Not many people nowadays have enough time to raise a large crop of tomatoes and bottle all the excess as salsa and stewed tomatoes. Besides, you rationalize, by the time I went to all the work of buying a pressure canner, bottles, lids and who knows what all else I'll need, I could just go to the store and buy the canned tomatoes for less money! Besides that, my home-grown tomatoes are all the cherry-sized tomatoes!

Chances are you are finally getting some ripe tomatoes, and you now have just a few too many to eat but not enough to preserve and put them up. If so, this tip is for you!

Most people are unaware that tomatoes are super easy to freeze. Just wash them and put them in a freezer bag and put them in the freezer. This is especially appropriate with cherry tomatoes. If you have larger tomatoes, they can be quartered and then frozen.

The cells of a tomato are filled with water. When you freeze the tomatoes, the cells will burst. This means that when you thaw the tomatoes, they will be mushy. But, to use these thawed tomatoes, all you have to do is pop them into a blender and liquefy them. You then have the base for a spaghetti sauce, a pizza sauce, or even a tomato soup. You will be surprised at how fresh and sweet a spaghetti or pizza sauce can taste when it hasn't been processed and bottled first!

A reminder! Now is the ideal time to buy daffodil and tulip bulbs. They can be planted any time during the month of October for early spring color next spring.

Thank you to both of our spotlight families!

The Brenchley Family

Our family moved here to Mountain Green in April. We moved from Tooele, where we lived for the past 12 years. We felt like we had outgrown our home there, and were ready for a change. We started looking in a few different areas, but Mountain Green just felt like the right fit for us… and Snowbasin being 10 minutes away didn’t hurt either!

Steve is a Civil Engineer for the State of Utah. He has also been in the Utah National Guard for the past 20 years. This past year he has been working for the Guard full-time, but plans to return to his State job in the next year or two.

My name is Melanie, and I’m a Labor and Delivery nurse at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. I work one day a week there. It never gets old to help bring beautiful babies into the world!

Steve and I met at Utah State – we love our Aggies! But I am from North Ogden, and Steve is from Ephraim, UT. Our family loves to camp, ride motorcycles, ski, and the kids love to play most every sport. Our boys are: Porter – age 10, Taylor – age 9, and Eric – age 4.

Not only is this a beautiful area to live in, but people here are so friendly and nice. We have been overly “treated-and-greeted” by so many of you. We look forward to meeting more friends and neighbors here in the years to come.

We are the Love Family- Brandon, Kresta, Breklyn (7), Brynlee (7), Krew (4), Kash (2). We are thrilled to be living in Mountain Green, it is a beautiful place to live and we are surrounded by wonderful people, we feel so blessed!

Brandon and I were both born and raised in Layton, Ut. We first met at Layton High School and were married after he served a mission in Raleigh, North Carolina. After 9 years in Layton, we decided to make the move to Mountain Green. We are currently renting a house while we build, but we are definitely here to stay. (Have I mentioned we love it?) Brandon owns his own business called Brunestone, it's a slinger truck company and he loves to hunt. I get to stay home with the kiddos and I love basketball and reality tv shows. Our family loves to go for rides in the mountains on the Ranger, camping, playing games and we are just getting the kids into snowboarding. We look forward to meeting more of our friends and neighbors!

ARE YOUR FLOWERS TUFFIES OR PANSIES?

The dictionary definition of a pansy is either a flower or a weakling. Maybe you were even called a “pansy” when you were a kid.

A friend commented to me once that pansy flowers were misnamed, because they were so tough and hardy, able to withstand weeks of freezing cold weather. He thought they ought to be called Tuffies instead.

If you visit your local Nursery or Garden Center, you will likely see fall pansies for sale in six-packs and individual pots. But many people, unaware of the extreme hardiness of pansies, will not buy them because they believe the coming snows of winter will kill them.

Pansies bought and planted in the fall will survive the winter and rebound in the spring, and then give you two more seasons of bright color. Yes, even in Mountain Green! Pansies will look even better the following spring, and will last far into summer. A fall-planted pansy will give you 3 full seasons of flowers: Fall, Spring and Summer.

The picture above shows my pansies on July 15^th, 2011. These pansies were planted the previous fall in 2010. The heat of summer 2011 did not slow up their flowering until the middle of August 2011, giving almost a full calendar year of flowers.

Conversely, if you plant pansies in the spring, you will only get them to flower during the spring and summer, because they will die off in August. So, a fall-planted pansy is a better value than a spring-planted pansy.

The practice of planting pansies in the fall is popular in many other parts of the USA, but not here in the West. A gardening friend of mine from Connecticut says they call them “winter pansies.”

Now you know why your local Garden Center sells pansies during the fall. I would encourage you to help the practice of fall-planted pansies become more popular here in Utah.

Wed. Dec. 14th at 1:00 pm--Silent Night.....A true story set in Germany on Christmas Eve 1944. American and German soldiers find themselves together in a French woman's farm house. Great!

Feb. 22 The Conscientious Objector........This true story is about Desmond Doss who refused to take up arms in WWll. Emotional, inspiring, heartfelt.

April 25 Iron Jawed Angels A true story of the women Suffragettes. Very compelling.

Rosehill Ward- September 2011

The Rosehill Ward meets from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, visitors are welcome.

Just a reminder of our ward goal to arrive to church 7 minutes early and to be more reverent at the beginning and during Sacrament meeting.

Ward Temple Night is Tuesday, September 20th, we will be attending the 6:30 pm session.

The Rosehill and Cottonwood Neighborhoods invite you to join us for a
Service Activity at the Mt. Green Cemetery on Friday, Sept. 23 from
5:30-7:30 P.M. Please meet behind the Highlands LDS chapel at 5378 W Old
Hwy Road. We will be pruning trees, trimming grass, mowing overgrowth, and gently
cleaning headstones.

Please bring pruning shears and saws, gas powered edgers and weed eaters,
conventional lawn mowers, and rakes and shovels if you would like to help
with this clean-up project, or bring soft rags and spray bottles to clean
the headstones. Contact Ray Walker at 801-458-0700 for more information.

The same evening we will also be collecting items for the YCC (Your
Community Connection), a Women's Crisis Center in Ogden.
The residents are in need of towels, washcloths, general household cleaning
supplies, Lysol disinfectant and deodorizer sprays, Clorox
wipes, personal hygiene items (soap, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray,
women's deodorant, combs and brushes, toothbrushes and toothpaste), and
women's and children's socks and underwear of various sizes.
Please bring these items to the Cemetery the same evening or drop them off at
Alisa Gunn's house anytime before. Call Alisa at 876-3790 for questions or
donation pick-up.

Gardening Article by Kelly Winterton:

When contemplating the upcoming gardening season of 2011, the obvious elephant in the room is the weather. The entire month of April has been extraordinarily wetter and colder than normal. So much so, in fact, that any planting of seeds or transplants, much less even the preparatory tilling of the soil has been delayed.

Throughout history, mankind has experienced events similar to this, which have brought about crop failures and famines. Luckily, modern civilization has compensated for local and regional crop failures by modern transportation and shipping of foodstuffs from other regions and even from other countries and continents. With recent increases in fuel costs, this means that the food we purchase in local grocery stores will become more expensive.

When considering our own personal flower beds and food gardens on our own property, there are certain things we can do to artificially protect our plants. But, often our efforts to maintain an artificial microclimate around our garden quickly become more expensive and labor-intensive than the actual worth of our harvest! Mother Nature is fickle, and can easily overpower even our most fervent attempts to keep her at bay. We would be powerless to protect our small gardens from something as powerful as a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, tsunami, wildfire, or hailstorm. Sometimes, a victory over Mother Nature can come down to something as simple as our luck of the draw.

Your most powerful weapon when fighting Mother Nature is simply finding the best location to site your garden. A site that is elevated somewhat will be less apt to flood, drain better and warm up quicker in the spring. A slope of even a couple of degrees to the south will warm up as much as a week quicker in the spring than a site that slopes even two degrees to the north. A windbreak in the right spot might also be the difference between success and failure. Quick growth also depends upon getting the maximum amount of sunlight for photosynthesis. Shade and shadows from tall fences and buildings will deter the growth of plants. Types of soils can also play a huge role. If you cannot find a good site on your property, construction of raised beds and/or container gardening might be the only viable solution.

Williams Hollow and Huge Rocks on Trail

The second night after walking the trail, we will camp at Williams Hollow campsite. We will have the opportunity to trek near/around some huge rocks that played a part of the saints trek West on this trail. Some journal entries regarding these huge rocks:

Heber W. Kimball, July 10, 1847

“On our arriving at the west side of the ridge 2 ¼ miles from the last mentioned spring (Copperas Springs), we found a very steep rough place to descent. We halted some time to fix the road. About half way down is a place where the road runs over huge rocks, leaving barely room for a wagon to get down, but by the labors of the brethren, it was soon made possible. A little further we had to dig down a pretty high bank which occupied sometime. President Young and myself assisted the digging.”

Spotlight: Fackrell Family

We are the Fackrell’s -
Jake, Suzy, Logan (10), Landon (10), Luke (6), and Lawson (4). A family of all boys, which gets pretty crazy, but we sure have a lot of fun! We get to do all boy things and Mom is still the princess of the home, so it works out pretty good.

We just recently moved to Mountain Green in December 2010. We still think that we’ve died and gone to heaven because it is so beautiful here. We moved from Corona, CA. We lived there for nine years and loved it, but we were ready to settle down and raise our family somewhere besides the city. Our life was full of Disneyland and the beach, but now it’s full of skiing & the outdoors. We are a very active family that enjoys pretty much anything. We love to ski, bike, hike, boat, travel, and do anything involving the outdoors and fun!

Jake and I met at Utah State and both graduated from there. Go Aggies! I stay home with the boys and Jake is still working his business in California part time. He owns a home health care company called Alta Home Care. We sold a portion of it so we could come back and live near our families. His family is from Preston, ID and I am from S. Ogden. We have really enjoyed being by our families again. We look forward to getting to know everyone and hope to meet you soon!

THE EASIEST VEGETABLES TO GROW IN MOUNTAIN GREEN

If you are contemplating planting a garden in Mountain Green so you can be a little bit more self-reliant, but don't know where to begin, let me suggest a few crops that are easy to grow, yet will provide a good harvest to help make a dent in your food budget.

The all-time easiest vegetable to grow is radishes. However, growing your own radishes will not help your food budget by much. But they are a great help if you combine a few radish seeds into your carrot seeds. The radishes are quick to sprout and will mark the row of carrot seeds, which are notoriously slow to sprout. You can harvest a few radishes before the carrots even have a chance get established. The carrots will reward you later in the years with a crop large enough to blanch and freeze. Radishes and carrots can be planted as early as you can work your soil.

Peas are easy to grow, but take a fair amount of garden space to give you a crop large enough for putting up in your freezer. Peas can be planted as soon as the soil temperature gets up to 50 degrees.

Beets are also easy to grow. A row of beets will yield enough not only to eat fresh, but to bottle a batch for winter use. They also can be planted early.

A lettuce mix (available pre-mixed) is also an easy crop. One row of leaf lettuce will give you more salads than you can eat! I really recommend a mix, because some varieties in the mix will perform well, and others will not. A mix will guarantee success. I'm not aware of a good way to preserve and store your excess lettuce though. Lettuce can also be planted early.

Bush beans are also fairly easy in Mountain Green. They are not frost tolerant, so put off planting your seeds until about the end of May. If you space your beans according to the directions on the back of the seed envelope, they should also reward you with a harvest that could be big enough to preserve in bottles as well as to eat fresh.

Two crops that have always done well for me in Mountain Green are Zucchini and cucumbers. Two Zucchini plants and two cucumber plants should be enough for a family. Excess Zucchini is easy to preserve by simply slicing it and freezing it – no blanching necessary. You could pickle excess cucumbers. The planting of cucumbers and Zucchini should be put off until the end of May when weather is settled.

Tuesday morning, June 28^th, we will depart Muddy Creek campsite and sometime during the trek that day we will pass Copperas Springs, where other saints spent the evening during their trek west. The following are excerpts from identified journals of Copperas Springs or Soda Springs:

William Clayton, July 10, 1847

“After traveling three and a half miles we passed a small copperas spring at the foot of a mountain a little to the left of the road. The water is very clear, but tastes very strong of copperas and alum and has a somewhat singular effect on the mouth. It runs a little distance over the red sand which abounds in the region and where it is saturated with water almost looks like blood at a distance.”

“Camped at Soda Springs, about 17 miles beyond Fort Bridger, tired enough. The wolves howled at night most dismally, causing an almost indescribable sensation. They seemed to wail and gnash their teeth for the fun of the thing. It was, however, no joke to me to be hushed to sleep with such music.”

Henry Emery camped here on September 23, 1853. He writes:

“23^rd very cold, rain. We camped at Copperas or Soda Springs. In the night the snow fell some 1 to 2 inches thick.”

The Sadler Family: Joe, Katie, Ethan, Gracie and Emmot
We were married 14 years ago after meeting at Weber State University. You could call Joe a stalker—he obtained my name secretly from his mom, who worked in the registration office. After keeping me in his sights for nearly a semester, he finally found the nerve to ask me out. That’s where our family began!

Joe is marketing director at Habitations, a residential design company. He’s the outdoorsman of the family and enjoys running, biking, snowshoeing, hiking, camping, etc.
Katie is a stay-at-home mom and part-time graphic designer. She’s an exercise fiend and loves creating things—digital scrapbooking, refinishing furniture, sewing and cooking.

Ethan, 10, can build anything from Legos! Like his dad, he loves the outdoors and especially enjoys catching frogs and snakes in the summer. He’s a sweet boy with huge dreams! When he grows up, he’ll be a doctor or a chef or a pilot…he wants to do it all!

Gracie, 6, is our perfectionist princess. She’s quite an accomplished pianist and loves going to kindergarten and playing with friends. She’s an animal lover and spends lots of time loving/torturing our two kittens!

Emmot, 2 ½ , always keeps us on our toes. He loves making messes, watching tractors, playing Mr. Potato Head, and raiding the pantry for fruit snacks! His favorite time of day is when daddy comes home from work.

We moved to Mountain Green in September after living in Syracuse for nearly 11 years. We consider ourselves so lucky and blessed to be living in a beautiful place with such wonderful friends and neighbors!

TIME TO START YOUR SEEDLINGS

I know it looks like spring will never arrive! But now is the time to begin planting your seeds inside the house for transplanting outside once the weather warms.

It is difficult to provide enough light for transplants from just a windowsill. Daylength is still short, and the glass from your double or triple-paned windows will block additional photons. If you plan to grow successful transplants using window light only, you will need to use reflectors or artificial light as a supplement.

Grow lights do not need to be fancy or expensive. Vegetable transplants grow adequately with just the cheapest cool white fluorescent or shoplight tubes. Keep the tubes two or three inches away from the plants, and keep them on 16 hours per day.

Timing your planting dates is one of the keys to success. If you want to start onions from seed, they should have been started already. Onions are a long season vegetable if you start from seed. They can be started as early as mid January to the first week of February.

If you want to start pepper plants, from now until mid March is the ideal time to start these seeds. Peppers can take up to 14 to 21 days to germinate, and after germination they are slow growers.

Most people are most anxious to start tomatoes. But having a little patience before planting your tomatoes will pay off. Tomatoes sprout quickly, and grow even quicker once sprouted. They will quickly outgrow your windowsills or grow lights, so the best time to plant your tomato seeds is the first week of April.

Last year, I planted my tomato seeds on Tax Day, April 15th. I harvested my first red ripe tomatoes on July 14th, just one day short of 3 months from planting the seed. This planting schedule attests to the fact that the tomato plants were timed to take full advantage of getting off to a quick start, never needing to slow down their growth by suffering from being started too early and being inhibited by a long, drawn-out childhood under growlights in a too-small container before being planted out into a too-cold garden soil and only kept alive by a plastic tent or Wall-of-Water artificial environment.

If you plan on starting pumpkins, squash or melons, these are best planted inside around the first to middle of May, and transplanted out to the garden while still young about June 1st.

CAT FOUND:
Last about November a fluffy, grey, male, neutered and friendly cat showed up at our back door. We have fattened him back up. He sleeps on the front porch in a pet tent with a heating pad. We cannot keep "Thomas" as we already have pets. We are also allergic to cats. Nonetheless, we do own an outdoor Kitty who is now indoors all the time because she is afraid of Thomas. We need to get her back outside from time to time.

He is clearly an inside pet who has had to adjust to the bitter outdoors. When I am outside, he follows me all over the yard. If I sit down he wants to be in my lap. He really needs to be where he can be loved and get the attention he wants. Please spread the word. He may belong to someone in one of the neighborhoods. If not and anyone wants him...I will pay for his first grooming as some of his heavy fur is matted.

We have a handicapped and bedbound daughter. Since we visit other children and travel quite a bit, we usually drive "Sandy" to another daughter's for care. On several occasions we've put her in an assisted facility when we had family reunions or other events. She does not do well with the facilities as she stresses. Sandy needs total care. I have a CNA coming 4 days a week and a nurse coming 2 days but it would be nice if there were someone in the area who could stay here with her when we travel. The CNA and nurse would continue to come and help and that makes it easier. We are looking for some experience in elder care. We would pay a flat, daily rate. My number is 801-388-5919. Beans are one of the easiest vegetables to grow - - or at least that’s what they told me. My first few harvests of beans in Mountain Green left much to be desired, but my neighbors all told me how they had beans coming out their ears. What secret did they know that I didn’t?

After those first few years of meager bean harvests, I tried different varieties of beans, different planting methods and different irrigation systems. I finally started to get those harvests I could be proud of.

Beans are a peculiar crop in their cultural needs. They don’t like the cold, and yet they don’t like extreme heat, either. They don’t like it too dry, yet if they are too wet they will suffer from pests and diseases. They don’t like the shade, yet they don’t like it too sunny, either. The solution is to provide just the right conditions for their optimum growth. This is not as hard as it sounds.

The secret to all this is to provide the correct spacing. If the beans are spaced too thickly and closely, they will shade each other out and compete with each other for the available water and nutrients. If spaced too closely, their leaves will be too thick which encourages no air circulation around the leaves and the stagnant, moist air will encourage pests and disease. But, if the beans are spaced too far apart, they will not be close enough to give each other a little bit of shade. But, given the correct spacing, they will give each other just the right amount of shading, yet their roots will not be too close to compete with each other.

My best crops have been from a double row that is 14 inches apart, with a drip irrigation line going down the middle. The beans on each side of the double row are spaced 10 inches apart. My double rows are spaced four feet apart from each other. The double row planting system allows the plants to help shade each other, yet allows enough air circulation around the leaves. With these double rows spaced at four feet apart, I have just enough room to walk up and down each row to harvest.

So why did I fail the first few years, yet my neighbors succeeded? The answer was simply that my neighbors read the spacing instructions on the back of the seed envelope!

Sweet & Savory Kale

2 T olive oil 1 small onion diced
2 cloves garlic minced 1 T Dijon mustard
4 t white sugar 1 T cider vinegar
1 ½ C chicken broth 4 C stemmed, torn, and rinsed kale
¼ c dried cranberries Salt and pepper to taste
¼ c sliced almonds
Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic, cook and stir until the onion softens and turns translucent, about 5 min. Stir in the mustard, sugar, vinegar, and chicken stock and bring to a boil over high heat. Stir in the kale, cover, and cook 5 minutes until wilted. Stir in the dried cranberries and continue boiling, uncovered, until the liquid has reduced by half and the cranberries have softened, about 15 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with sliced almonds before serving.

I am a reading coach in Davis School District. I work with teachers from grades K-6 and enjoy working with all ages of children. The most rewarding part for me is helping them feel successful.

Tip: All children can be successful if they can learn at the appropriate level for them. Reading and discussing it with them consistently is so important. The more we read with them the smarter they can become.

It’s back to school time again and I am enjoying my 29th year. I have been with Weber School District for the past 29 years. I’ve worked with elementary children in kindergarten through 6th grade, working as a teacher for 12 years and an elementary counselor for 17 years.

I have watched the growth of thousands of children. I first see them walking into Kindergarten and move into Jr. High then High school. It doesn’t stop there. How many times have I gone out to shop to see one of my friends whom I knew when they were in one of my schools?

My advice to parents with children in school is the following: The child who is successful in school and life is the child whose teacher and parent realizes that they can’t learn for kids no matter how much they love them. So many of my parents today are obsessed with the desire to create a perfect image for their kids. In this perfect life their kids never have to face struggles, be inconvenienced, have discomfort, or be faced with disappointment. The parents and teacher make the kid’s problems theirs. Parents jump in and want to help solve their children’s problem. That is leaving the educational/ learning part of life to the parents and not the child. Parents should be the consultants. You offer and can suggest ways that the child can try to solve their own problems.

Realize that our mistakes become our best teachers. In school, learning is a process approached best by having the parents, student and teacher all involved. Your child should be doing 99% of the work not you.

Spotlight: Tim & Amy Peters

My name is Amy Peters and I currently work for the Utah Personnel Development Center (UPDC) as a Program Specialist. The UPDC is the professional development arm of the State Office of Education. I am passionate about education and my loves include Early Childhood education, Autism Spectrum Disorder, behavior and speech and language. Prior to joining the UPDC, I worked for Weber School District for 15 years as a speech-language pathologist and behavior specialist among other things.

My husband, Tim, is currently the Principal of Highland Jr. High School in Ogden City Schools. He has spent his career in the secondary setting. He has taught a variety of high school courses, worked as an Applied Technology Coordinator and a Vice Principal.

The only advice I could think of is to be sure to let teachers and administrators know when you think that they are doing a good job or something is going well. A note or quick email can go a long way.

For Tim and I the New Year is not January 1st. It is now. So, best wishes for the New Year!

Spotlight: Jeneen Gardner

Hi: I am Jeneen Gardner. I teach 2nd Grade at Mountain Green Elem. I have taught Kindergarten and First Grade also. I have lived in Mountain Green for 25 years. I love teaching for it is so rewarding to see the kids light up when they finally understand a concept. I feel that I do make a difference. My advice to parents is staying involved in your child's education is the key to a successful year. Engage your child in conversation about his/her day, but know that children won't always give out much information. Instead of saying "What did you do at school today?" (The answer is often "nothing!"), you can say, "Tell me what you did in math? What did you read today? How is your story coming along in writing workshop? Tell me something good that happened in school!"

Spotlight: Jared Barlow

I have been teaching in Morgan for the last five years. I spent two years before that teaching at Roy High School. I taught the Special Education class at the High School, involving students with severe and moderate disabilities my first two years. I have been teaching resource, PE, and health classes for the last 3 years. This year I am moving over to the Middle School where I will be teaching Physical Education classes to the 6th and 8th graders. My other assignment has involved another love of mine, athletics. I have been coaching high school football for the last ten years, five of them in Morgan. Currently I am the varsity Defensive Coordinator. I am also coaching the Freshman Boys basketball team, which I have done for the last two years. I also spent a few years coaching track.

As the school year is starting my advice to parents and students is this: Take the time to be involved. The more a parent is positively involved in their child's life, the more success the child will have. I firmly believe that parents are one of the most important factors to student success. Students also need to be involved. Don't be involved just in schoolwork, but extracurricular activities as well. It doesn't matter if it is sports, music, clubs, tutoring, or anything else the schools or community provide, just be part of something. Great lessons can be learned through these activities and students will feel a sense of belonging and accomplishment. I am grateful I have the opportunity to be involved in the lives of our youth and I hope to instill a sense of worth and success in them. If you ever have any questions or needs, please let me know.

Spotlight: Nanette Merrell

Nanette Merrell (Nan) is one of our Middle School teachers. She teaches 7th and 8th Grades Pre-algebra and Algebra. This will be Nan’s 35th year of teaching children. She has taught 4th - 8th grade students. It has been her opportunity to teach in 4 different states and two countries having been part of a military family. She taught in Morgan 16 years ago, left for a few years to move to Florida and has returned and taught in Morgan for the last 11 years. She figures over the 35 years of teaching she has taught approximately 4,000 students. Nan has a loving and supportive husband, 8 children including daughter and son-in-laws and will have 11 grand children by December. Her three sons all serve in our military with their families. All four of her children live away so she spends her summers traveling with her husband to visit her kids. She said teaching in Morgan has been the choicest assignment she has had in her teaching career because the students and their families are so great. She said for years her students have slipped and occasionally called her Mom. This last year a few inadvertently called her Grandma. She says, “That’s great because if I can be a momentary Mom or Grandma to them, then my teaching experience is all worth it”. She looks forward to a few more years of teaching your children.

What an amazing job! I teach 2nd grade at beautiful Mtn. Green Elementary. There is something so magical about this age group - I just love them. At the beginning of the school year I feel it's always so important for parents to get them geared up, emotionally, for a great school year. Encourage them to try new things and display confidence in them that they can be successful. If you believe that they can be successful...they most likely will. Make sure you set high standards for your child and again, give them the confidence they need to achieve those standards. I look forward to another amazing class and am excited to work with great parents who truly care about their child's education.

Gardening In Mountain Green - Kelly Winterton

We’ve all heard the saying: “A stitch in time saves nine.” With the advent of clothing made in sweatshops from China and Viet Nam, this may not be true any longer. However, the concept is still true when it comes to our health, car maintenance or gardening.

Mother Nature and the phenomenon of Global Dimming have given us another cold and wet June. The soil is still wet under the surface. If you get out in your garden and flower beds now to loosen and till up the soil, you will save yourself much grief later when the heat of July wants to dry out your soil into the consistency of cement.

Going one step further than simply spading up or tilling your soil now, you might choose to till in a little compost or Soil Pep. This will pay dividends during July and August by keeping the soil workable and able to sponge up any available moisture.

Another advantage in working up your soil right away will be that the weeds you eliminate now will not go to seed to create even more weeds later.

Do not look upon the job of a thorough weeding and working of your soil right now as a dreaded chore, but as that “stitch in time” that will pay dividends later when you’d rather be lounging in your hammock or at the lake fishing.

Spotlight: The Voris Family

Michelle and Andy Voris with their son George moved to Mountain Green in April from a suburb of Chicago, Il. Andy and Michelle came to Utah in 2006 to get married in Big Cottonwood Canyon before moving to Denver, C0 for Andy's business. Then they returned to Illinois and opened up their own personal training studio. After 4 years in business they decided the business was doing well enough that they could live where ever they want as they managed the business from a distance and chose Mountain Green. Andy and Michelle became partners in the Wasatch Altitude Training Center in Mountain Green before leaving Illinois and they are excited to live here and give their son George the type of upbringing they hoped for.The Voris family enjoys hiking, camping, fishing, biking, running, and swimming when they are not helping people with their fitness. Michelle was born in Salt Lake area so she is sort of coming home and Andy is from Illinois originally so this is pretty new to him. Stop in the Wasatch Altitude Training Center and say hello!

Spotlight: The Hansen Family

We are the Hansen family! Cory, Maria, and our daughter Audrey. We are excited to be a part of the Mountain Green community and have felt welcomed by everyone here. Thank you!!

Cory grew up in Kaysville his whole life and has always loved anything to do with animals. That is a big reason why he wanted to move our family to Mountain Green-to be closer to nature and all the animals that are running through these beautiful hills! We have had many exotic animals in our home including snakes (LARGE and small), sugar gliders (flying squirrels), hedgehogs, ferrets, cats, dogs, tarantulas, lizards, chinchillas...you name it, he's probably owned it at some point. He also loves the outdoors and loves to fish and hunt whenever he gets the chance. He just returned from his first bear hunt and is already planning the rest of the year around his hunting excursions. Cory also loves to play games, especially with family. He works as a civilian contract negotiator at HAFB.

I (Maria) grew up mostly in Idaho Falls, ID, and have followed Cory around the western US wherever his jobs have taken our family! We met at Utah State where Cory got his MBA and I got my Elementary Ed degree. I taught 5th and 1st grade until Audrey arrived and have been at home playing with her and processing mortgages ever since. I love to read, run (jog), play/teach piano, and spend time with family. I also love nature and being outdoors. Interestingly, I do NOT enjoy having little animals running around our house, so I've had to adjust to the zoo that Cory wishes he could have! :)

Audrey is five and is full of energy and life! She can't wait to begin kindergarten in the fall. She is such a happy girl and is always looking for her next friend to play with. She has enjoyed her preschool, dance, and piano lessons so far and we're excited to get her involved with soccer and t-ball in the coming seasons.

We look forward to many happy years in this beautiful community!

Spotlight: The Tenney Family

We are Mark and Lynn Tenney. We started our marriage in Mountain Green, moved to Fruit Heights, and then returned to Mountain Green. Mark grew up in South Ogden and graduated from Bonneville. He served an LDS mission in England. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history at Weber State. Mark is the branch manager and salesman for a financial product firm. I grew up in Morgan and graduated from Morgan High. I earned my associate degree in business at Utah State and am currently working on my bachelors at Weber State. I work as the marketing and communications director for a tax software firm. We met through a mutual friend. We have two children.

Zack is married to Jill and they live in South Ogden. They are the proud parents of Mark’s pride and joy grandson, Jameson. Zack served a mission in Korea and works for Questar. Jill works as a development analyst for a tax software firm.

Emily is married to Chance Buttars and they live in West Haven. They are both students at Weber State. Emily is an instructor at The Vista College in Layton teaching in the medical assistant program. Chance served a mission in Mexico. He earned his LPN and works at McKay Dee Hospital in the O.R. and sleep lab.

We love the outdoors and weekends when we can all be together. We have met many wonderful people over the years and feel very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and great area.

Spotlight: The Lindley Family

Hi, we are the Lindley family. Trevor and I met at Utah State where we were going to college. We were married in the Logan LDS temple in 1994. Trevor completed his degree in Environmental Engineering; I graduated with a Geography degree. Not too long after leaving Utah State our first child (Tyson) was born. We lived in Roy, Utah for a couple of years. Then we headed to Ohio. Trevor attended graduate school at University of Cincinnati. It was in Anderson Township, Ohio that our second child (Emma) was born. In Cincinnati, we enjoyed the Cincinnati Reds, the Amish country towns, and meeting lots of great people. After Ohio, we headed back West. We moved to Phoenix, Arizona in July of 2001. When we got off the plane, it was 100 degrees and 10:00 at night! I thought “what have we done.” At that moment I wondered why anyone lived in Phoenix. But after we got settled, it turned out to be a wonderful place - heat and all! Our third child (Ashton) was born while we were in Arizona. In Phoenix, we enjoyed the Arizona Diamondbacks, being just a six hour drive to Disneyland (five hours to the beach in San Diego), and once again meeting a bunch of awesome people. We then made the decision to move back to Utah. It was a tough decision. We moved to Mountain Green in April 2007. Our fourth child (Brandon) was born here in Utah. Here in Utah we have enjoyed being closer to family, and getting to know the wonderful people of Mountain Green.

Trevor works for a civil engineering company in Kaysville. He loves to flyfish. He wishes that he had more time to pursue this hobby, but his work and his children (not to mention his wife) keep him pretty busy. I like to garden and love to visit my favorite places (Disneyland and Yellowstone). I also like to take road trips to new places. You will probably find Tyson (13) playing baseball. He can’t seem to play enough baseball. He also likes to read and snowboard. He is a great kid. Emma (10) is finding that she likes to dance. She is also a great swimmer. She has a quick wit about her. Ashton (6) is enjoyable. He loves life. He has picked up the love of baseball from his brother. And Brandon (2) is one busy kid. He likes to play outside and read books. We are glad to be part of this neighborhood. Mountain Green is beautiful and we feel fortunate to live here.

June is a good month to fertilize your lawn, if you feel you need to. (There are ways to do it organically.) But please remember, we all live downstream.

As the lower Cottonwoods still have not received word yet that it is safe for infants and small children to drink the water, it is extremely important that you do not contribute to this problem by over-fertilizing your lawn.

Applying a “little extra” fertilizer will not help your lawn. In this case, more is not better. A plant can only take up as much Nitrogen as it needs, not more. That “little extra” fertilizer you apply to your lawn will only leach into the groundwater.

Measure the square footage of your lawn, and then apply ONLY the recommended amount for your square footage according to the instructions on your fertilizer bag. Remember, a fertilizer company will want you to apply the maximum amount, as often as they think will be optimum. This is so the fertilizer company can make the maximum amount of profit off you. So, if you err, be sure to err on the side of not quite as much as is recommended on the package.

Utah soils are blessed to have ample Phosphorus and Potassium already in the soil. The main ingredient a Utah soil will need is Nitrogen. Because Mountain Green soils need more Nitrogen for lawn growth, but the ground water already has too much Nitrogen indicates that something is out of balance with Nature. Make sure you are not part of that imbalance.

Jordanne Nicole Thomas Born May 2, 1992 Jordanne is planning to attend Dixie State College in the fall where she will begin her studies to become a pharmacist.

Randi Lee

Randi has loved attending Morgan High School and getting to meet such good friends. She loves life and loves being with her friends doing crazy things. She enjoys a wide variety of music, movies, books and scuba diving. She is now employed at Beyond Spa and enjoys working with the people there. She is looking forward to attending college and stretching her wings and seeing what the world has to offer.

Jordyn Jacobson

At MHS Jordyn was involved in seminary, cheerleading, sports filming, Honor Society, etc. This year she also certified in yoga and started the yoga club at Morgan High. She will be going to USU to begin studies toward a career in medicine. She will be rooming with her good friend Bekah Miner.

Nicole Reardon

Nicole has a love for dance after being on the drill team for the past two years. After graduation Nicole is off to Taylor Andrews and we couldn't be more proud of her.

Tanner Taggart

After graduation, Tanner will head to Cherry Valley BSA camp on Catalina Island off the coast of California, to work on the staff there this summer teaching astronomy and marine wildlife merit badges. In the fall, he will be attending Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, to study business.

Taylor Telford

Taylor is the daughter of Hank & Bonnie Telford. Taylor participated in Drill Team, Drama and graduated from Seminary. She will attend Weber State in the Fall. Congrats Taylor!

Carson Baltazar

Carson is our 4th child to graduate from good old Morgan High. He is an amazing young man and we love having him in our family. Carson is smart and funny and seems to like hanging out with a variety of friends. He enjoys snowboarding and wakeboarding and just about anything outside. He has become an uncle in the last year (three cute nephews) and he is so sweet to these babies. They smile from ear to ear when he enters the room. Carson plans on going to UVU in Orem for 2 semesters then plans on going on an LDS mission next year. We will miss having him around and all his equally amazing friends that we feel are our sons as well. Good luck Carson! Congratulations to all the graduates!

Braxton Willie

Braxton is a graduate of Fremont High School, as academic all state for basketball, first team all region for football, first team all area for football, academic first team all region for basketball, silver scholar, captain for both football and basketball, army national scholar and is preparing for his Mission to the Philippines.

Savana Wilkinson

Savana is glad to be graduating but will miss all of the good times she had while attending Morgan High. Savana was a varsity cheerleader for 4 years and enjoyed cheering for all of her friends. The girls on her squad became like sisters to her. So on top of her 3 real sisters she got to share a lot of love.On top of schoolwork and cheer, Savana worked at the Dance Shack as a tumbling coach. She loves the kids and appreciates the hard work they put in to get better at their skills.Savana enjoyed her psychology classes, but not math so much. She took the opportunity to become a CNA, and plans on working as a CNA and the Dance Shack, while she attends Weber State University. We are glad that she is staying close to home. Savana is a peacemaker and tries to be kind to everyone. She is almost always happy and brightens our day. We are so proud of her and her accomplishments. I think she would say her biggest accomplishment was graduating from seminary. We think that is pretty awesome too.

Kaislie Shepherd

Kaislie will be graduating from Northridge High school on June 4th she has received a AFROTC Scholarship to be used at any college or University in the country. Her plans are to become an officer in the United States Air Force and obtain her Master's in Education. We are very proud of Kaislie's accomplishments! Congratulations Class of 2010!

Will Kendell

Since Will was a child, he has always looked out for people. He always saw the one that got their feelings hurt and is right there to congratulate you on whatever was accomplished. Its crazy that he is graduating high school and will be putting his mission papers in soon. :) He enjoys playing softball/baseball, hanging out with friends, and learning about history. We are so proud of Will and his accomplishments and are grateful to have him in our family. :)

Katelin Babcock

Tim Dudley

Tim Dudley was born in South Dakota and has lived in Germany, Maryland, Missouri, and Utah. Tim enjoys music, video games, and movies. He plays the Trombone and Trumpet and has been teaching himself to play the piano and guitar. He served as Band President at Morgan High School for the 2009-2010 school year and was instrumental in starting the marching band. Tim will be attending Brigham Young University for one year prior to serving a LDS mission. He was accepted into the BYU marching band and is very excited about performing during halftime at football games. Tim is a natural leader and brings out the best in everyone around him.

Jessiqa Dredge

Jessiqa loves music, dance, reading and her friends. During high school she was in Millennial Choir for two years, serving as choir historian her junior year. Her senior year she sang with the Ovation Choir and was choir historian. She enjoyed dancing with the Troyette Drill team her sophomore and junior years. Jessiqa has loved participating in seminary and served on the Seminary council this year. She continues to play the piano and has six piano students. She has maintained a 3.9 GPA and will attend Utah State University on academic scholarship in the fall to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. We love you Jessiqa and are so proud of you!

Rebekah Miner

Rebekah graduated from Morgan High School as a leader. Senior Class President, Regional English Sterling Scholar runner-up, Honor Society member, and writer for the Morgan County News and Editor for the MHS Newspaper are but a few of her accomplishments. She will attend USU with Jordyn in the fall.

Dakotah Martin

From the day Dakotah could walk, he could be found taking apart, building and rebuilding everything! From birdhouses fences, houses, rock walls, cars, engines and many inventions in the works, he continues to do everything he sets his mind to. He has now decided to go and help build up God's Kingdom by serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the fall. We as his parents are so very proud of him for all he has become and striving to be. We love you Dakotah and know that you'll do great things!

Anna Newton

In about 7 weeks Anna will be leaving for Europe to be a nanny for a wonderful LDS family of 5 children in Luxembourg. They are an hour and 15 minutes away from Doug and Rachel in Germany. She is very excited.

Produce Co-op/CSA Coming to Mountain Green!
Everyone likes a great deal, right? Well a couple groups of women have been volunteering a lot of time to bring great deals to our community. In the form of a Produce Co-op and a CSA. Here’s how option #1 (the Co-op) works: you order your produce basket online, at http://www.bountifulbaskets.org/ on Mondays beginning April 19th starting at 1:00 PM, then pick up on Saturday, April 24th at Rex Wilkinson's shop in Mtn. Green by the Cottonwoods Water office). There are also going to be sites in Milton and Morgan. Typically, the orders fill up pretty quick. We are prepared to handle 100 baskets, in Mtn. Green. Morgan is shooting for 200 and we’re not sure what Milton is planning. It won’t take long to catch on and everyone will be wanting in. It's nice to have different close locations just in case one spot is full. The Conventional produce baskets are $15, the Organic (if available) are $25, there is a $3 one-time startup fee, and a $1.50 shipping and handling charge each time you order. The pickup time will depend on when the trucks can come through here and will be posted when you register, and pay online. You have to re-order each week. On Monday when you get on the webpage you would click in current offerings. Then you find the pick up location you want. If it's not there, it's not available. There are also other offerings like bread, specials on fruit, etc. You click on yes or no as you go through the order. You do not get to choose what is in your basket - you get what comes on the truck. Option #2 East Farms is a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). You pay a one-time fee up front. This money is used for the farmer to plant, raise and harvest the crops. We have made arrangements for East Farms from West Point Utah to deliver produce to Mountain Green. Unlike a Co-op this produce is locally grown and is only available from the first week of June through Pumpkins at the end of October. Their website is: http://www.eastfarms.net/. On their website they list what you can expect to receive each week, depending on the weather. You can sign up on their website and pay your fee. As we are a new delivery site, please put Mountain Green on your form. Janette Wilkinson is the person who is working with East Farms. You can contact her at http://us.mc454.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=janettewilkinson@mail.weber.edu or at 876-3132. Please let her know if you have signed up or would like to sign up. We need a minimum of 10 people to guarantee delivery to Mountain Green. Thanks to those that worked so hard getting these options going for us.
Congratulations! Carolyn Morrison graduated from Weber State University on April 24th with a Bachelors Degree in Art. All seven of her children flew in for her graduation.

Magnificent Mountain Green Moms!!!

Jan Forsberg is THE MOST talented woman I know, honestly! If she wants something done, she gets on the internet, figures out how....and viola! It's done. Here's a list of SOME of the things she can do, but don't tell her I told you. People keep her pretty busy already because she's so willing to share her talents: She makes incredible quilts that depict pictures from your favorite vacations! She can finish a basement- framing to electrical to duct-work to finishing! Sew ANYTHING, and I mean anything! Cook anything...although it's not her favorite chore...but she's good at it. Landscaper extraordinaire and master gardener!!!! Room design and decorating! You'd kill to have her organize your food storage system for you! Don't get me started on everything she does for her ward. Computer skills that go beyond the geek squad. And have I mentioned she has an entire ACE hardware store in her garage???? (Those aren't Dave's tools.) I haven't seen her fix a car yet, but I'm waiting for the day. Can you imagine how all these talents add to her already fantastic mothering abilities? Someday, those little girls are gonna be unstoppable- JUST LIKE MOM. No one will ever be able to tell them they can't do something. A good mom teaches her kids Number One: that God and Jesus love them, Number Two: that Mommy and Daddy love them, and Number Three: that they are capable kids who will become capable adults. Susan Linford grew up in Ogden, UT. She graduated from Bonneville High School. She Married Chuck Linford in July 1973. She has 6 adorable grown up children, 4 grandchildren. She has always been such a gracious person and has opened her home to over 10 foster children and numerous family members in need. She has been an extraordinary example of service to everyone around her. She is an extremely caring mother with a tender soul. As you know she has run a daycare out of our home for many years. I still don’t know her secret about how she can keep on top of things like she does. She has always instilled a feeling of love in all the people around her. We are so grateful for all the things she has taught us about the world and the gospel. She has always been the one there for late night conversations, cheerleader at school sporting events, piano recitals, dance competitions, band concerts, school presentations, and anything that her children’s crazy minds can think of doing. She has always taught us to dream big and that we are children of a loving heavenly father and that we are never alone. She has been through many trials and her kids never made anything easier but we appreciate all the patients and over loads of love she has for us, and for the beautiful world we live on. May is Planting Month

May is planting month for Mountain Green. It is not too late to begin….. but hurry!

If you have not planted your peas, carrots, lettuce and cabbage, you can do this right now. (May 1st) Other things can be planted during the first part of May, like beets and onions. All of these plants will take a little frost with no problem.

Other plants need weather that is a little more settled. An unexpected frost might harm them, or even kill them! For plants like tomatoes, peppers, beans, corn, squash and pumpkins, you need to wait until the latter part of May for planting. I have seen frosts in Mountain Green in June. While frost in June is not normal, you will need to have a plan in place to protect your young plants if the weather turns unexpectedly cold. Usually, frost protection can be as simple as throwing a bed sheet or piece of plastic over the plants at night. This covering will hold the heat from soil underneath, and exclude the colder air from above.

Spotlight: The Wheeler Family

The Wheeler Family: Mark grew up in Morgan Valley and knew that when it came time to raise a family of his own, he wanted the same great experience for his own children. Laura who grew up in the booming metropolis of Davis county didn't want to have to drive 20 minutes to the nearest Target. The compromise was Mountain Green. We love living here. What a wonderful thing to live above the big black cloud that hangs over the SL valley in the winter. Mark is a chiropractor and loves helping other people. Laura was a science teacher and now stays at home with the kids; Megan(14), Ethan(8), Emery(7), Ty(5), Luke(2). We love spending time together and will try anything that will get our family out of doors. We ski, snowboard, hike, snowshoe, bike, run, 4-wheel, golf, wakeboard, play soccer, football, tennis, baseball, and play basketball. All kids are welcome at our house at anytime. We love to play! This summer Laura plans on taking the kids fossil hunting. We hope to get in a trip to Lava, the cabin, go rafting down the snake, hiking in Zion’s, and hit at least 1 beach somewhere warm. The boys plan on catching several snakes, frogs and lizards to add to our collection. We are grateful to live in a community that cares so greatly for the education and health of their children. We love to live in a community where our neighbors are also our friends!

Spotlight: The Archibald Family

Hi, we are the Archibald’s; we are ruled by soccer...games, practice, play, coaching or reffing. We finally moved out of Ally’s parent’s basement right next to Tyler’s parent’s house. We REALLY love our parents.

Tyler is going to Weber State in their accounting program and only has a few semesters left. Wahoo! Manchester United is his favorite soccer team. Though soccer is his favorite, he also likes other sports and we are always cheering for some team. He is a teacher in the Sunday School.

Ally…let’s make it simple, I love: Johnny Depp, Paris, busy airports, Louis Vuitton (though I don't own anything-look but don't touch), wearing long sleeves in the summer, and asking outrageously personal questions (warning: if any of you are asked these questions don’t feel the need to respond!!!) I have the pleasure of serving in the Young Women's program.

We enjoy traveling, video games, movies, and playing sports together. We have been married 5 years, though Ally has stalked Tyler for much longer!

Tyli is 3, almost 4, loves anything princess or Dora. Her favorite colors are pink and red. Unlike her mother she prefers to wear dresses and all things girly.

Jonas is 2 and loves trucks, planes, trains, and automobiles. Like his father is very happy and fun to be around. He is starting to talk and it reminds us of Scooby Doo. Tyli calls him Prince, everyday he is a different prince; prince Charming prince Phillip, or prince Derek. It’s sure fun to watch them play.

We are expecting #3 in November and so are joining the minivan crew! YAY!We are so very excited that the Collins' decided to buy a new house so that we could buy theirs and enjoy the place of our youth with our children. We really love this ward and are grateful to be home.

Spotlight: The Dixon Family

Hi, we’re the Dixon’s. We live at 5725 N Brook Circle. We moved to Mountain Green last July, and we have been thrilled about it ever since. We have spent the last 11 1/2 years moving around between Minnesota, Nebraska, Alaska and California. We have really enjoyed our move up to the mountains and meeting all the friendly people in Mountain Green.

Joel is a physical therapist in the Air Force and currently works at Hill, AFB. He likes to spend time doing home improvement projects and landscaping. (Which is good since the yard is still barren and full of dirt.)

Tracey loves to read, scrapbook, play BUNCO and shop. Tracey stays at home with our 9 year old twin boys, Joey (in red) and Brenton (in blue). Alex, our oldest son, is currently a freshman at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He is currently majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He hopes to one day be a pilot in the Air Force or to work on designing new airplanes.

Joel and the twins learned how to ski this year at Snow Basin. All of them have really enjoyed it, but the twins have especially had a good time watching their dad fall down a lot.

Joey has found many activities to occupy his time. This past Christmas he was part of the Mountain Green Choir and he got to be one of the soloists. He also plays soccer, but recently discovered and started gymnastics. Joey loves to play Wii and hang out with his friends in the circle.

Brenton has recently found a love for geology and spends most of his time outside digging for rocks. He has become quite the scholar and done research to identify all the different rocks he has found. Brenton also loves to play soccer, play Wii and ride his bike.

We are blessed to have found Mountain Green to call our home and look forward to meeting more of you.

Spotlight: The Marsden Family

Hello from the Marsdens, Craig, Elaine and our five children. Cambria (24) Graduated from Utah State University in psychology and served an LDS mission to Brazil. She is working at Valley Nursery and trying to decide where to get her masters in social work. She is very social and we have many young single adults at our home. We will miss that when she moves out in May. Jen (22) is married to our wonderful son-in-law Brad Brown (24) and they have given us our little treasure Brielle. (18 months) We love being grandparents. Another treasure is on the way in October! They live in West Haven. They both graduated also from Utah State last December. Jen with a bachelors in public health and Brad with a masters in civil engineering. We love living close to them and hope it stays that way. Alex (20) left for a mission to Peru Lima East just a week ago. He is so excited to serve in the same areas his dad did many years ago. His dad insists it was just a few years ago. We will miss him and his quick, witty humor along with all his friends. Melissa (17) is a junior. She is enjoying Morgan High and all her friends. She loves just about everything. She plays on the softball team and played tennis in the fall. She is a joy. Seth (14) is the tallest in our family. He is in 9th grade and looking forward to being at the high school with Missy. Seth is an avid book reader and also loves to write. He is very talented and will help support his parents when he becomes a famous author. He is happy to have a cell phone again – Alex’s.

We are so happy to have our family here in beautiful Mountain Green among so many wonderful people. Craig and I grew up in Ogden and attended Bonneville High School together in the same class. We dated in high school, but it took us 7 years to finally tie the knot. We married shortly after I returned from serving a mission in Venezuela. I started nursing school and Craig, medical school shortly after our honeymoon. We have lived in Arizona, Farmington, Virginia and are happy to be HOME. Our passion is humanitarian work. We have been to Peru and Bolivia several times on humanitarian expeditions and are planning one in Ecuador in June. We also love to travel and spend time together. We look forward to getting to know all of you.

EVERYONE who has a Kindergartener in our school boundaries needs to register their child at the school before May 1. The school gains/loses Kindergarten teachers based on numbers from Kindergarten round-up and those who register before May. It is very important that ALL new kindergartners register before May. Pass the word along to those you know who didn't attend round-up and to anybody who you know that will be moving into our boundary by the time school begins.
Volunteers Needed to help with Morgan’s Hometown Independence Day Celebration, Saturday July 3rd. There are many areas to help out, one thing we really need a float entry from our area of the community depicting the them of “Let Freedom Ring” or “What Freedom Means” This is also a great opportunity to have a booth to fund raise for your group, organization or even yourself. As spring weather slowly arrives in Mountain Green, the first question most people ask me is how soon can I start planting my garden? The month of April is mostly a month of garden preparation. Focus on preparing your soil before you start focusing on planting seeds. Don’t get the horse before the cart!

Your soil is the “root” of your gardening success. The better your soil, the easier it will be to realize success over the course of the next gardening season. The old adage is really true: “Feed your soil, and it will feed you.”

A basic law of horticulture is a plant’s need for nutrients (fertilizer). You can provide this fertilizer in two different ways. You can provide it chemically, or you can provide it organically.

Plants cannot, however, derive their nutrients directly from organic matter, like compost or manures. Plants do, however, obtain nutrients from the decomposition of the organic matter. As the bacteria and fungi feed on the organic matter in your soil, they “poop” out the nutrients which the plant then can use for growth.

Organic materials such as compost and manures will provide a secondary benefit to your soil besides the fertilizing action of bacteria and fungi. Organic materials worked into your soil become a sponge for moisture. You will have to water less often.

As you prepare your soil in April, consider adding some organic material. It will be well worth your effort.

Spotlight: The Evans Family

We are the Evans family! We have lived in Mountain Green for about 2 1/2 years. We love living here and have really enjoyed all our neighbors and all the friends that we have made! Tyler grew up in Mapleton were his family still lives. He graduated from Springville high school and then went on to be a brick mason for many years. He attended UVSC where he earned his construction management degree and now works for Hughes Contractors. He is the Superintendent on the job and is currently building a Jr High in Kaysville. We are just happy to have him close to home after working in Rock Springs for a year and a half. He would be in heaven if he could go golfing everyday! He also loves hunting and enjoys the great outdoors.

Alisha grew up in Bountiful Utah and attended Bountiful High. She went on to SUU for 2 years and then to UVSC where she meet Tyler and their journey began. They were marred in the Salt Lake temple in 2001. Alisha is a stay at home Mom and is very grateful that she gets to spend so much time with her kids! In her spare time she loves a good book, exercising, spending time with friends and loves going to a good movie. She also enjoys camping and has even been roped into a few hunting trips but has yet to be the actual hunter, although Tyler keeps telling her it is going to happen one year.

We are lucky to be blessed with 3 little princesses. Taylor (5) loves Kindergarten and learning to read. She is our little academic and enjoys attending her music and tumbling class. She loves to play with her friends that she has made and doing arts and crafts. She even enjoys hunting and fishing with her dad which is great since he doesn't have any boys.

Marissa (3) is full of spunk and keeps us all laughing. She is very entertaining and has quickly learned how to push her sisters buttons in a very sly way. She loves hugs and is a great snuggle buddy. She enjoys going to her neighborhood preschool and tumbling class. She loves being outside and would swing all day if somebody would push her.

Libby (7 months) the joy of our family! We love having a baby in the home, especially one that sleeps all night! She loves to play with her sisters and watching them run around. She loves to be around people and really really likes to be held, especially by her mom!

Spotlight: The Grow Family

Hello from the Grows. We moved back to Utah almost two ago. Bob and I (Tricia) were high school sweethearts and have been married for 12 1/2 years. We were both raised in Sandy. I attended the University of Utah, while Bob attended BYU. After undergrad, we moved around the country for Bob's medical school and training. We have lived in Arlington, Virginia; Baltimore, Maryland; and Rochester, Minnesota. We loved our time away from Utah but also feel blessed to be back and raising our family here. When we discovered Mountain Green, thanks to Janise and Brian Loveridge, we knew this was the place we wanted to move. We have always wanted to settle out West and in the mountains. We have four beautiful and energetic children: Brooke (9), Wyatt (6), Garrett (3 ½), and Parker (18 months). Brooke loves soccer, dance, reading, playing with friends, and playing piano (sometimes). Wyatt enjoys soccer, riding his bike and playing the guitar. Garrett can't wait to start soccer and t-ball this summer, likes riding his bike and scooter and is always smiling. Parker keeps us running from morning 'til night, climbs everything and loves his daddy. We are looking forward to another summer that we can spend exploring Utah’s national parks and playing at Pineview Reservoir.

Spotlight: The Weston Family

We are the Weston’s – Chris, Stacie, Caiden & Traegan (Trae).

We built and moved into our home on 3977 Iris Ave in August of 2006. We were immediately surrounded with good neighbors who have become lifelong friends.

Chris has spent the last 8 years in pharmaceutical national brokerage sales and is currently starting a home health & hospice business in Idaho. Chris loves anything that he can do outdoors—that is when he can find the time. He loves hunting, 4-wheeling, fishing, cycling, running, golfing, etc….. Wrestling and plastic sword fights are daily occurrences with his two “best buddies” the second he gets home. He also enjoys working with the young men in the church and community.

I’m constantly chasing two active boys around—ranging from breaking up wrestling matches, figuring out transformers, learning the names of monster jam trucks and preventing our little “Luke Skywalker” from lightsaber attacking everyone and everything in the house. When time allows I enjoy scrapbooking, blogging, sewing quilts and having “alone time”(shopping)—leaving Chris with the boys.

Caiden is 6 and in Kindergarten. When he’s not playing with friends or playing his favorite four-wheeler game, he’s doing fun things with his Dad. Caiden loves taking things apart and then fixing them. He’s an expert at transformers and wants to be a doctor when he grows up.
Trae is almost 3 and loves everything Star Wars. He has a lightsaber in every color and goes around the house referring to himself as “Luke”. Trae loves to tease, especially his brother, and is always on the go.

We are so grateful for the wonderful friends we have made and for the opportunity to have lived in beautiful Mountain Green. Thank you for the influence and impact that you’ve had on our family.

Spotlight: The Wilkins Family

We are the Wilkins – Beau; Janet; Carson; Porter; and Davis. We live at 5730 Brook Circle and moved to Mountain Green last October from Syracuse.

Beau was active duty Air Force for the last 11 years. He now fly’s part-time in the Air Force Reserves and works as a civilian full-time on Hill AFB. After 8 moves we are very happy to be here and hope to call Mountain Green our permanent home.

Our 3 boys keep us busy. Carson (9) is in 3rd Grade and loves to read and play sports. Porter (6) is in Kindergarten and also loves sports as well as playing video games. The both love to wrestle each other and we sometimes wonder why we don’t have more emergency room visits. Our baby, Davis just turned 1 in February. He is such a fun addition to our home and keeps us running. He has also learned from his brothers how to wrestle.

We feel very blessed to live in such a wonderful community and look forward to meeting more of you.

BUY YOUR SEEDS EARLY

As the economic crisis deepened during 2009, many people turned their thoughts to planting a garden for the first time. It is estimated by some that up to seven million first time gardens were started last year.

This sudden increase in demand for seeds taxed the reserves of the seed industry to supply the necessary demand. Some people found spot shortages of seeds at their local nurseries and garden centers.

Seed suppliers attempted to gear up for this season's anticipated increase in demand, but the weather for producing those seeds last year was very difficult. Their were some crop failures due to the cold and wet spring, followed by the hot and dry summer. We have been warned that because of these crop failures, we could also see spot shortages of some seeds this coming season.

Right now is the time take stock of the seeds you need for the upcoming season. Buy those seeds NOW. I was at the Ogden Lowe's and Home Depot yesterday and those seed racks are already full. There is also plenty of time to mail-order any specialty seeds you cannot acquire locally.

My employment has just changed and I have a new job with Pineae Greenhouses. The owners told me just last week that their supply of fruit trees was similarly sold out early last year, leaving many would-be buyers without a fruit tree in stock.

Remember, it wasn't raining when Noah started to build the ark.

Spotlight: The Royall Family

Mike and Lisa Royall have lived in Mountain Green for about 1 ½ years now and love not only the beautiful surroundings, but our wonderful neighbors! We combined our two families 22 years ago and have raised our nine children, who now range in age from 27 to 40 and who live from coast to coast. We are “Pop and Nana” to 16 delightful grandchildren. Mike grew up on James Island, South Carolina and his family moved to Utah when he was 16 years old. He’s retired from the Navy and Delta Airlines and spends a lot of time at the airport here. Besides flying, he loves being on a boat, particularly sailing. I was raised in Bountiful and Mike and I raised our children in Farmington. I went back to school a few years ago and got a degree in Family History. I also enjoy reading a good book and love to tag along with Mike on his airplane and boating adventures.

We are the Chastons; my name is Trista and my husband’s name is Reve. We have three boys; Burke, Graham, and Rhett. Reve and I grew up in Mountain Green but didn’t get acquainted until we met in college. We recently moved back to Utah after living out of state for ten years. We are happy to be near family… we think. Burke is age 7 and in first grade. He sometimes likes school but could do without the homework. He enjoys playing outside, is a very fast runner, and has an obsession with airplanes. Graham is our well adjusted middle child. He is age 41/2, and yes he is a boy, don’t let that long hair fool you. He has an obsession with aliens and monsters and he likes telling his big brother what to do. Rhett is now 10 months old (can't believe that) he is busy exploring uncharted territory and making messes. Reve is a Scorpio and Trista is a Gemini; that about sums up the Chaston family.

Spotlight: The Bond Family

Hello from the BOND Family! We are so blessed and thrilled to be living in Mountain Green among such wonderful people everywhere. We have been in many different places and wards (moving 11 times in 13 years) and know we are finally home, here in this beautiful valley. Our family consists of Josh & Sydney, Kobyn (11) who enjoys just about anything that requires creativity and invention, Breckyn (9) who always make sure others are taken care of but also loves a good laugh, Brightyn (6) is our example of strength with the many health challenges she has overcome with a smile, & Aspyn (2) seems to be our most determined of all and keeps us running. There is something to be said about “saving your energy for the last,” because she makes us tired and excited all at the same time!

Just as most of you chose Mountain Green for its outdoor beauty, we too love to snow ski, bike, run, boat, and just about anything to keep us active and exploring. Above all, we love doing it together as a family. We have also enjoyed being active with so many of you and look forward to meeting many more in the coming activities!

Spotlight: The Martin Family

Hi, We are the Martins! Ken, Tammy, Dakotah, Jaden, Ridge and Ke'Nia. We live on 5540 Day Lily and we LOVE it here. We love the Mountains and the wonderful friends and neighbors we are surrounded by. We as a family love to play together and work together. Our family business is campusbookrentals.com, where we rent textbooks to college students and spend a good 4 - 5 months there at the beginning of every quarter. In the off season, we like to camp, 4-wheel, snowmobile and just hang out as a family.

Dakotah is 18 and will be graduating from Morgan High this year. He is very talented and loves building things such as zip lines over the lake, recliner go-carts, crazy snowsleds and rebuilding old cars like his Mustang. He loves snow sports and water sports and has recently received his Eagle Scout.

Jaden has recently turned 16 and is finally a legal driver! His love is the mountain where he loves to snowboard and is looking forward to do some competing. In the summer he likes to wakeboard and will give scuba diving a try this year. He has experienced ranching and all that goes with it! He likes hang with his friends and drive around his new purchase.

Ridge is 9 and can hardly wait for summer. He loves baseball! He likes to spend his time with his friends playing Legos and video games. He enjoys scouts and teasing his little sister.
Ke'Nia is 6 and is our Princess. She loves all the girly things...Dancing, ice skating, tumbling, tea parties and boys! Being surrounded by all brothers, she definitely can hold her own.

Ken and I love to be with our kids and we find that our hobbies are found in supporting them, therefore changing all the time! Thanks to all those around us who have given our kids such wonderful friendships and great examples. What a great place to live!

SHOULD YOU MAIL-ORDER YOUR SEEDS, OR GET THEM FROM A LOCAL BUSINESS

Often we feel we should support the local merchants and buy our seeds and plants locally. But, we sure like the look and description of that heirloom yellow tomato or that purple potato in the seed catalog! How do you decide where to spend your garden money?

My advice is to support your local economy when it is advantageous to your wants and needs. A local nursery or garden center will probably have a small to medium selection of plants and seeds to choose from. They may have just what you are looking for. When I go to buy some Zucchini seeds or Beet seeds, I really don’t care what kind I get. I can buy these seeds on the seed rack in the local hardware store or at the local nursery.

But there are certain kinds of vegetables that simply are not available here in Utah. When I need some special kind of seed or plant, I will then turn to my favorite catalog and order it.

Many of the seeds and plants available in local nurseries and garden centers are adapted to the lower Ogden and Salt Lake Valleys. When buying your seeds and plants locally, make sure they will do well in Mountain Green by observing a couple general rules of thumb.

First, buy seeds that are rated at 70 days or less. Seeds rated at more than 70 days may not do well in Mountain Green because of our shorter growing season. Second, buy plants that are rated for zones 2, 3 or 4. Plants rated zone 5 or 6 do well in Ogden, but not in Mountain Green because of our colder winters and springs.

Sweet corn is a good example. Corn rated at 70 days or less is available through mail order, but you won’t find corn seed that matures that quickly at a local nursery or garden center in Utah.

The Spoiled Under 30 Crowd!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were, when they were growing up; what with walking Twenty-five miles to school every morning..... Uphill... barefoot... BOTH ways! Yadda, yadda, yadda.And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way I was give a guilt trip like that to my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in Utopia! And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it! I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!! There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take, like, a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our fanny! Nowhere was safe!

There were no MP3' s or Napsters! If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself! Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and mess it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished and sometimes the tape would come undone. Cause - that's how we rolled, dig?

We didn't have fancy phone features like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it! And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... forever! And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were out of luck when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off the couch and walk over to the TV to change the channel! NO REMOTES!!!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little brats! And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove! Imagine that!

That's exactly what I'm talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled. You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or before!

Spotlight: The Perry Family

We are the Perry’s! We moved to Mountain Green from Syracuse at the end of August 09 and LOVE IT! The views and people are amazing….but we’re still trying to get used to not having a grocery store just down the street!

Travis was born in North Carolina and was what you would call an “Army Brat.” He spent his youth living in Panama and Germany. His family settled in Layton, Utah his Junior year of High School and considers it his “home.” He graduated from Layton High School in’95 and then served in the New York Rochester Mission. Travis attended Weber State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. He also Graduated from the Air Force R.O.T.C. at the University of Utah as a 2nd Lieutenant. Travis served his time in the Air Force and made the switch to the Air National Guard where he currently serves as a Captain. On the civilian side he works as a Supervisor of Network Operations for Qwest Communications for the Weber and Morgan County areas. Travis is a very “calculated” spontaneous person. He loves to travel and try new things. He loves to joke around and keeps us laughing at home!

Aimee was born and raised in Grantsville, Utah (a Morgan High School rival!) She graduated from Grantsville High School in ’02 and went on to Dixie State College where she earned and Associates Degree. Aimee transferred to Utah State University and entered the Elementary Education program in which she completed her Bachelor’s Degree. She currently teaches 5th grade at South Clearfield Elementary in Davis School District. When she’s not chasing Austin, Aimee enjoys reading, dancing, and sports!

Travis and Aimee met while Aimee was student teaching. Her class (of 5th graders) was at a career fair at Miller Motor Sports Park and Travis was there as a presenter. Travis tried to call Aimee up to embarrass her in front of her students (unsuccessfully) and there was a definite spark. After he apologized he asked her out on a date and after 1 ½ years of dating they were married in the Salt Lake Temple.

Austin is 3 years old and full of energy! He loves to go to Nursery and Sacrament Meeting! He can often be heard trying to pray over the person at the pulpit. Austin has a love for anything that resembles Spider Man or any of the characters from Toy Story. He is very active and loves to play! His favorite activity would definitely have to be wrestling! He loves to wrestle with Mom and Dad (whether we want to or not!) He has a love for reading and singing songs. He is always smiling and is a bright spot in the day of anyone he comes in contact with!

Meet the Neuenschwanders. Seth and Rikki have been married for almost 12 years and have happily landed in this beautiful valley of Mountain Green. Our Family has moved 12 times in the last 10 years and are happy to say that we think we are here to stay. Seth grew up in Bountiful and graduated from Weber State University or "just Weber" of you have gone to one of the big colleges further south. He served a mission in Brazil and is now working for a Bio-Tech company called Amgen. He has started biking and skiing since we have been here and is really loving the outdoors. Rikki grew up close to here in Ogden and graduated from "just Weber" as well. She went to Bonneville High and is happy to be back up north. When she is not being a mother of her 4 kids She loves, loves, loves a good book and has taken a liking to the new Lone Peak Fitness classes that require her to wake up practically in the middle of the night to get there. Bronson is 10 and is learning to ski this year. He also plays on a Morgan Competition basketball team and in the summer likes to play soccer and baseball. He is our biggest little Utah Jazz fan and loves to bug his little sisters. Madison is six and is a dancing and tumbling fool. We don't think she knows how to walk into a room without doing a cartwheel or back bend. She is loving the Dance Shack this year and is also learning how to ski this year. Gracie is four and is our little dreamer. She is almost always in her own world but loves to snuggle and watch movies all day. She is also learning to dance and tumble at the Dance Shack. Our newest addition is Bridger who is now 4 months old. He is the best sleeper (about 9 hours each night) and the kids just adore him. He was very stubborn when it came to joining our family but he is finally here and we are so grateful to have him. We love this community and are loving raising our family here in Mountain Green.

Spotlight: The Allred Family

Hello we are the Allred's. We recently moved to Mtn. Green from Syracuse. We are excited to live in such a beautiful location and have enjoyed making new friends. We were drawn to Mtn. Green by the great location, beautiful surroundings and amazing access to great recreational opportunities. We (Matt and Britnee) both grew up in the Ogden area. We met at Weber High School where we were high school sweethearts, and have been married for 13 years. We have three children (Kaden-10, Judson-7, Gracee-2) that keep us spinning all the time!

Matt attended Weber State University and works in the financial services industry. He grew up as part of a large family (8 children) in North Ogden, and we enjoy spending time with his family camping, and for fun family "get-together's". He enjoys sports and recreation and can be found trying something new each year whether it is biking, skiing, running or triathlon.

Britnee also attended Weber State University and is a full-time mom, for which she deserves an award. She grew up in Taylor and we enjoy spending time with her family boating in Lake Powell. In addition to staying busy with the kids, she loves to exercise. In her free time she enjoys running, water and snow skiing or reading a good book.

Kaden (10) and Judson (7) are full of life and love to play. They enjoy camping, anything in the outdoors and recently have learned to snowboard and according to them will never "go back" to skiing. Gracee (2) is our princess. She loves to take care of her dolls and can often be found taking her baby doll for an imaginary visit to the doctors office. She is sweet and has helped to balance out the abundance of "boy energy" we have in our home.

We look forward to getting to know you and are thankful for the kind reception we have received since we have been here. We are impressed with the schools, neighbors and sense of community in Mtn. Green, and look forward to being an active part of this great community.

Spotlight: The Jolin Family

The Jolin Family has lived at 5547 Day Lily Drive for nearly four years. Our Family consists of Jeff & Stacy, and our three boys: Ryan (19), Jacob (15), and Alex (9). We moved to Mountain Green after Jeff retired from a 23-year Air Force career in Electronic Warfare Systems. We spent several years living in Clovis, New Mexico & West Point, Utah before building our dream home in this development.

Jeff was raised in the Northern Woods of Wisconsin near Lake Superior, amongst many lakes and trees. Early in his military career he lived in Florida and Germany and served our country in the Gulf War, Operation Northern and Southern Watch, and served several tours to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kosovo, and Korea. (We Thank Him and all of our Veteran Friends for their Service to Our Great Nation)! In 2004 Jeff retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant and is now employed by the USAF in Range Threat Systems at Hill Air Force Base. Jeff loves the outdoors and enjoys building, golfing, skiing, hunting, playing in the yard, fishing, traveling, and camping with the family.

I (Stacy) was raised in Vernal, Utah on a farm in beautiful country near Flaming Gorge. My family has a busy meat packing business in Vernal and still maintains a large amount of farmland there. I am a registered nurse working in the operating room at McKay-Dee Hospital, and I also manage the Tissue Implant Program for five of Intermountain Healthcare’s northern hospitals. Besides work and family, I am a part-time student at Weber State University working on some educational goals of mine. I enjoy my family, my work, traveling, yard work, crafty stuff, skiing, and camping.

Our oldest son Ryan joined the Air Force January 12, and was selected for Air Traffic Control training. We are so excited and very, very proud of Ryan for his accomplishment’s. He finished a semester at Weber State this past fall and plans on continuing his education while mastering his studies in Air Traffic Control. Ryan graduated in June of 2009 from Morgan High School and gained many wonderful friendships and memories along the way.

Our middle son Jacob is a freshman at Morgan High and enjoys the choir and drama departments at the school. He says that he is ready for college already, and wants to pursue a career in radiology. He is a wonderful student and is already setting reachable goals. Jacob is a fun and helpful kid and enjoys snow boarding, computers, friends, and travel.

Alex is our youngest and loves to engage in anything outdoors. His energetic personality gives us a few gray hairs at times, but he is such a fun and enjoyable boy. Currently Alex wants to become a soldier, so we will see how that materializes as he grows. He loves to play with his friends and cousins and enjoys history, video games, camping, fishing, and skiing. He is ready to trade his skis in for a snowboard, so it looks like we will be getting him some snowboarding lessons soon.

Our family members from Wisconsin and Minnesota love to visit us here in Utah. They can’t get over the shock and awe of the beautiful mountains and terrain that surround us. We feel very fortunate to be living in this beautiful area, and to be blessed with a happy and healthy family. Happy New Year to our friends & neighbor’s in Mountain Green!!

My very best gardens exist only in my mind, as I dream and scheme in front of the wood-burning stove on a cold January day. To help me in my winter garden dreaming, good garden catalogs with their pretty pictures and descriptions are invaluable.

These garden catalogs are also a very good source of gardening information, telling you how to grow a successful garden. A good catalog will tell you all sorts of cool information like the optimum temperature for seed germination, days to maturity, sun, soil and water needs, and the growing zone. (We are zone 4.)

These catalogs are almost always free. You simply need to request one and it will appear in your mailbox within the next week. It really makes my day if I receive a nice, shiny, colorful seed catalog in my mailbox on a snowy, cold day.

Spotlight: The Sanders Family

Hey, there! We are the Sanders family. We moved to Mtn Green from Syracuse just about 5 months ago. We love it here and are enjoying the beautiful mountains, awesome snow and the super friendly people! Unfortunately, you may not find our stories that exciting, but there NEVER seems to be a dull moment in our home.

Brandt was born and raised in a city called Taylor, UT. He attended Weber High School and graduated from Weber State College as one of the first grads from the Technical Sales Program. He owns his own company called Orthosource and distributes orthopedic surgical supplies. He loves to be outside, especially with his dog, Caddice. For his hobbies, he enjoys hunting, fishing, dog trials, and teasing anyone he can. Brandt spends most of his time earning money for Shalece to spend.

Shalece is also from Taylor, UT. We met in a Singles Ward! Ha, Ha! She attended Weber High School and graduated from Salt Lake Community College as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. Her main job now is raising the four monkeys you see in the picture. She enjoys cooking, scrapbooking, exercising (JK), camping, shopping, and reading. She spends most of her time telling Brandt to stop teasing!

Breely (12) is the oldest child in the family. She enjoys sewing, reading, crafting, skiing and shopping. She plays the piano and is becoming better everyday. She is a great big sister and has inherited her Dad’s teasing trait. She has a fun sense of humor and is a great helper with her baby bro.

Brenon (9) is the oldest boy. He loves sports. The more the better, but his favorites are football and basketball. He also enjoys being outside. He has the kindest heart and is very loyal. His fun laugh and smile are contagious. He is also a great bro to his baby bro.

Janson (7) is our third child. He is our little engineer. He always wants to conduct experiments and likes to figure out how things work. He loves computers and electronics of all kinds. He is also good at snowboarding and is a great reader. He is determined and strong-willed.

Porter (2 ½) is the baby and the glue in this family. He is a little peacemaker. He loves Dora and Diego (so does Mom) and Toy Story. He pretty much wants to do whatever his siblings are doing. He always wants to be outside, especially with his dad and big brothers. He is a very social little guy. He already flirts with all the little girls, especially Presley Allen!

I told you we sound pretty typical, but there is NEVER a dull moment in our house. Please come for a visit, especially if you want some good entertainment!

Spotlight: The Lee Family

Hi we are the Lee family. We live at 4053 Mountainbrook Way. Cory and Earlene have been married for 33 years and have lived in Bountiful, Coeur d'Alene Idaho, Ogden, Roy, and Riverdale, before moving here to Mountain Green. We have been here for 2 years this December.

Cory graduated from Weber State in Computer Science and has been working on data bases at Hill Air Force Base.

Earlene is has been working for Riverdale Justice Court for the past 10 years and enjoys her work there. We love motorcycle riding, hockey, scouting, and scuba diving.

Our oldest daughter MaryAnn is 26 yrs old and has been married to Scott Spinler for 5 years. They both have graduated from Weber State and are now working and are living in Ogden.

Randi is A Senior at Morgan High and loving her last year of school. She has found many new and great friends here. She is a member of the honor society, and she loves math, Spanish, music, movies, good books and scuba diving. We have really enjoyed living in the valley. Can't say we really like the snow, but glad to be living in such a beautiful, peaceful area.

Hi everyone,

We are Linda Williams and Heather and Isaac Lyon. We moved here to Mtn. Green about 1-½ years ago, and live on Coventry Circle. We chose Mtn. Green because both of our husbands are in heaven, and we wanted to find a safe and beautiful area to live. We surely have found this to be the right place for us! Thank-you to wonderful friends that we have found here.

Linda is Heather’s mom, and has 3 other grown children all here in Utah. She has 5 ½ grandchildren, and loves each one of them so much! She works as an RN down in Murray at Intermountain Medical Center in the Recovery Room. She likes to camp, target shoot, read, and would like to own stock in Disney somewhere!

Heather loves to sing, take her little pop-up tent trailer camping (especially Yellowstone), and is a great cook. Isaac is 5 years old, and started kindergarten this year. He loves to ride his bike, visit neighbors (with or without permission!), and to play Wii. He also is known to escape the house and ride too far on his bike with our collie, Shadow, in tow.

We would like to thank everyone for taking care of us, especially the little fairies that come and shovel our walk and driveway every time the snow flies. We are very blessed to live here!

Spotlight: The Mecham Family

We are the Mecham's! There is Justin (Dad), Keylee (Mom), Lann, (8 yrs old), Rees (almost 6), and Averee (3).

Justin was born and raised in Morgan on a farm on Stoddard Lane that his parents still own and run. He grew up doing farming and construction and graduated from Morgan High School (he is a thoroughbred Morganite!). He later served a mission to the Capetown, South Africa mission. He received his BA Degree in Accounting from Weber State University and his Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Utah State University. He currently owns a successful marketing company. He enjoys exercising, long Ranger rides (especially in Moab!), and anything outdoors.

Keylee was raised in Roy and graduated from Roy High School. Her family moved to Mountain Green in 1998 (Eddie and Nancy Cameron are her parents). Keylee enjoys exercising and especially running - she runs several half-marathons and 5ks each year always placing in the top in her age group (no, she is not running in the Senior class). She is training to run a few marathons this next year as well as tri-athlons. She is a total clean-freak; she always keeps our house in tip-top shape and we love her so much for it!

Keylee and Justin met in 1998 on a young single adult trip to Jackson Hole (the Snake River is our "River-of-Love"!) just a few months after Justin came home from his mission. We were married in the Salt Lake temple in 1999 and have always lived in Morgan County which we love!

Lann and Rees are full of energy - they are very competitive and love anything sports. Their favorite thing to do is race their 4 wheelers - Lann placed 1st and Rees placed 2nd overall at the Morgan Mini-moto this year. They also love riding their 4 wheelers on their Grandpa Mecham's land and going for Ranger rides.

Averee is our "little-mom" - even though she is only 3, she keeps all of us in line and makes sure everyone knows she is the boss! She melts her dad's heart and is so much fun. She also loves Ranger rides and is just as crazy as the boys!

Spotlight: The Johnson Family

The Johnsons have been in Mountain Green, Rose Hill for just over 4 yrs. After spending the early married yrs in Reno, Nevada to attend school, Jana & Jason were excited to bring Chiara Star and Viana Belle back to Jason’s home town and closer to both families. This proved especially helpful as the twins, Andre & Dante, were born in that first year back. Aside from family being close, it was immediately evident how great the neighbors are here, as much service was gratefully received.

From the beginnings of 4 kids under 4, the whole bunch together provides plenty of excitement both at home and away. Chiara (7) is a smiling 1st grader that loves to make friends and to spend alone time with parents. She likes to share and make others happy, and does well at most activities…as long as they keep her attention. Viana is 5 and immediately makes friends wherever we go, usually with boys. Accepting the title of “tom boy” with reluctance, she seems to be helping boys understand that girls can be cool too. Her dad thinks it’s strange and flattering that Viana prefers his short & balding hair style over current girl styles.

Now 3, Andre & Dante are rarely apart. They’ve always loved the several “grandmas & grandpas” in the neighborhood and at church. Having each other makes it easier to adapt to new situations & people. Dante loves bikes, motorcycles & grandpa’s 4-wheeler. Andre loves to tease anyone, big or small, as a monster. He likes movies, singing soft A Capella by himself, and is prided as the best cleaner/tidier of the family.

Jana grew up in Fillmore, attended Utah State and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno. She enjoys her new friends here, and that rare escape when she gets away from the other 5. She truly dedicates herself to her kids and is grateful for small bits of pre-kid hobbies such as reading, traveling, volleyball & snowboarding. Actively exchanging kids & having an open door (usually literally) make sure the 4 kids aren’t bored or stuck playing only with siblings.

Jason vaguely remembers snowboarding, mtn biking & traveling, but has found a much more addicting hobby of motorcycling & desert racing. He insists that his level of aggression makes it much milder than many would think. One race goes a long way to clear the mind of life’s stresses. Another favorite activity is spending individual time with Jana and each child. Since Jason doesn’t make money on a motorcycle, he spends weekdays, evenings & many weekends as a mortgage loan officer. Aside from the recent challenges of that industry, he enjoys the interaction with customers and loves to be working in Mtn Green, less than a mile from home.

Our family is especially grateful to be in this area at this time. We’ve received countless acts of service and for that will always cherish your friendship.

Dec 7th - Community Food Drive - It's the Holiday Season and time for the most important Community Unity event we have had all year! Coming together as a Neighborhood and making a Christmas wish come true for so many people in Morgan who will be able to enjoy a Christmas dinner and, eat and not go hungry all season long. In lieu neighborhood Christmas gifts, please consider giving to The Local Food Bank. Perhaps you could share Christmas Carols and acts of service throughout the year to those who are blessed with the bounties of life. Bring a bag of food to the Cottonwood 1st phase park on Monday Dec 7th between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. There will be a truck there waiting for your donation and candy canes for the kids! Food will be delivered to the Local Food Bank. (Thank You for a great Year of Community Unity Events! We have been successful in coming together and getting to know each other. Next year should be a year of grown friendships and familiarity as we continue to enjoy each others company! Thanks for your SUPPORT!!)

Nitrates In Our Drinking Water

As we continue under the water company's nitrate warning, you are perhaps wondering where those nitrates are coming from. The water company tells us they are still looking for the cause. While I don't claim I know the cause, I can tell you where most of the nitrates in other water systems do come from.

In 1908, a process was discovered to artificially produce Nitrogen fertilizer. Until that time, all fertilizers came from natural sources. Agriculture depended upon such natural sources like bat guano and other manures. During the "Green Revolution" of the 1950's chemically produced Nitrogen fertilizer became ubiquitous.

The problem, however, is that Nitrogen fertilizers are over-used and what plants don't take up finds its way into ground waters, streams and rivers. Studies show that of all fertilizer applications, only about 21% is taken up by plants and the other 79% ends up polluting our waterways.

The most famous evidence of this Nitrogen pollution is in the 20,0000 square kilometer dead zone at the outlet of the Mississippi river, where no fish can survive. There are many of these "dead zones" throughout the world. The largest is found in the Baltic Sea.

I'm not sure whether our current nitrate pollution's comes from increased Nitrogen fertilizer being spread on an increased amount of lawns or not. But I do know that Nature has a way of balancing and cleansing herself, and the sudden increase use of nitrates had to come from some disruption in this balance. Even if the sudden increased use of Nitrogen fertilizers upon a sudden increase in laws in the area is NOT the cause, it is still wise to limit the amount of fertilizer you apply to your lawns to only the amount your grass is able to absorb This will also save you some money! Spotlight: The Wall Family

We are David and Arbra Wall who live at 4037 Ivy Avenue. We moved in three years ago after our marriage and building our home. We truly love the beauty of the mountains, watching the seasons change and the animals and creatures around us. Our marriage began as a wonderful Cinderella Story. We were classmates while in High School and, after forty years, met at our High School Reunion. We dated for a short time and very soon realized we had a great future together. We were sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple on December 30, 2005 by President Thomas S. Monson. Dave previously served as Elder Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Bishop, High Counselor (twice) and Counselor in Winder Stake Presidency in Holladay. He also served as an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. He has 39 years experience in the mortgage industry including Vice President for Western Savings, Deseret Federal, West One Bank, U.S. Bank and Senior Vice President of Prime Alliance Bank. Currently, he is employed at City 1st Mortgage in Bountiful. He has many years experience as a professional speaker and is a published author. Dave’s community service includes twenty years in the Sugarhouse Rotary Club including serving as President. He loves horses and has raised several champion Arabian show horses. He graduated from the U of U and is an avid UTE fan. He loves hunting, fly fishing and all other sports. Dave and his first wife had five children: Brent, Anne, Ben, Brad and Andrea. Brent (Anesthesiologist) and his wife Christie live in Clarksville, TN with their four children. Anne has Down’s syndrome and resides in a care center in Salt Lake City. Ben (Dentist) and his wife Emily have two children and recently moved to Mount Vernon, WA. Brad (Software Engineer) and his wife Jodylyn reside in Woods Cross with their three children. Andrea and her husband Jeff live in Bountiful with their two young daughters.

I have three daughters: Melanie, Brandi and Marilyn. Melanie and her husband Glen (CEO, Fine Print Solutions) have four children and live in South Jordan. Brandi and her husband Shawn (Dentist) have two children and live in Price, Utah. Marilyn (Administrative Program Coordinator) works in General Internal Medicine at the U of U Medical Center. She is being trained in Palliative Care and attends night classes working towards her degree. I spent 14 years as a volunteer in the PTA. I served at the local level, as Council President and spent three years as Regional PTA Director in Granite School District. I also served on the State PTA Board and on the Utah State PTA Board of Directors. After 28 years as owner/operator of my own beauty salon, I returned to school and graduated from the U of U with a Bachelor degree in Organizational Communication. I spent 14 years at LDS Church Headquarters as a Certified Professional Human Resource Representative. I have performed with community and Church groups and as a member of a trio called “The Sunshine Singers” which travel around the Salt Lake Valley entertaining at Relief Society functions. I enjoy movies and especially old-time or western movies with good human-interest stories. I love most all music and enjoy dancing, cooking, gardening, decorating, and watching the McMillan’s baby lambs romp in the field across from our home every spring. I absolutely LOVE Christmas, snowmen and Dave (not necessarily in that order). We love Mountain Green and truly appreciate the friendships and memories we’ve made here.

Spotlight: The Erickson Family

Hi! We are the Erickson family. We have lived in Mtn. Green for about 3 1/2 years. We have three kids and are expecting our fourth in April. Tyce, 8, is our oldest. He is in 3rd grade and loves sports, scouts, and anything he can do with his dad. Sydney is 5 and started kindergarten this year. She loves her dance class, drawing, and running wild with her brothers. Bodie will be three at the end of December. He loves fishing, and riding in the ranger with his dad. He is the goofball in our family and is so much fun. Cade grew up in Mt. green. He works in Layton as a real estate agent for Remax Unlimited. When he has time off, he enjoys golfing and snowmobiling. I (Stacey) grew up in Morgan. I love being able to stay home with our kids. I enjoy reading, hiking & snowshoeing, and spending time with family and friends. We love being able to spend time together as a family, especially our game nights. We love living in Mtn. green and are grateful to be surrounded by so many wonderful people!

Spotlight: The Lowder Family

We are the Lowder's. Mike, Erika, Spencer(12), Ethan(10), Isaac(6), and Maggie(3). We moved to Mountain Green 3 years ago. We lived in Cache Valley before that and loved it. So when work called for a move we looked for that same type of feeling and found it here! We looooove living here with you all and we especially love living in the mountains. Snow doesn't bother us a bit, in fact we look forward to it. The boys like all the regular things, snowboarding, skateboarding, basketball, motorcycles and video games. Their mother forces them to take tumbling and piano. Maggie rebelled against all of the testosterone and wants everything to be pink. She loves all princess everything and keeps us all in tea parties and trips to the castle. Erika likes to sew and cook. She loves the ladies at the gym, and she loves to snowboard. Mike works for DC. He would rather snowboard than eat and happens to be the long haired guy rolling around the neighborhood on a skateboard. If you see a rodent at our house it is actually a dog. Norman is his name and we adore him. Thank you for being such wonderful neighbors. We are so blessed to live among you all. We hope to end our days living in this beautiful valley!!!

Spotlight: The Horstman's

We moved to Mountain Green just 19 months ago, after building our dream home in the Cottonwoods. We have been married for thirty years and have lived all over the world.

We met in California as Hugh was beginning his career in the Air Force. Hugh started off flying the B-52 then moved to the F-111 and finally the F-16. We moved a total of 10 times in our 20 plus years in the Air Force to include two overseas assignments to England and Germany.

Our last assignment brought us to Hill AFB. We bought a house in Layton and our children both graduated from Layton High school. Hugh retired from flying for the Air Force and moved on to a career flying for Southwest Airlines. We fell in love with the Wasatch Mountains. Skiing all winter and biking or golfing in the spring, summer, and fall makes for a good life. We searched other cities and states for a place to build but in the end the friends we had made in Utah and the call of the great outdoors led us to the Cottonwoods.

Our son Cole is 23 and lives in Eden with his wife Keishla and 9 month old son Zeke. Cole and Keishla both work and are planning on attending Weber State this spring. They were married this year at our home with family and friends in attendance. There is nothing like a wedding to motivate finishing the yard and house. Zeke is our first Grandchild and we are having a lot of fun being grandparents. It is great to spend time holding a baby and spoiling him, then sending him home to his parents.

Our Daughter Danielle is 26 and lives with her new husband Craig in Chicago Il. Danielle and her husband are both lawyers and live the dream in downtown Chicago. We enjoy visiting them every 3-4 months to get our fill of city life. They were married in October in Savannah GA. It was a large wedding with family and friends from all over the world. We are still sorting through the 1500 plus photos. When we return home the mountain views remind us of why we chose Mountain Green to call home.

Hugh keeps busy year round out of doors skiing, biking and golfing. He likes to call his job at Southwest the best part time gig around and boasts that this year he has at least 126 days of outdoor recreation. He is a member of the Ogden Exchange club and enjoys being a part of the community.

I like to ski and golf also although not to the same degree. I like to cook, entertain and volunteer when I can in the community. We both are avid readers and spend a lot of time in the library that we built in our new house. We both travel as often as we can exploring new places and visiting friends made over the years. Being a grandmother is the best, and living here in Utah is the icing on the cake.

Nov 13th - Parent Drug Awareness Presentation, 7:00pm, Mountain Green Elementary School. Topics Addressed: What drugs are prevalent in our area? And how are our kids exposed to them? How to recognize signs, symptoms of usage of these particular drugs (and others). What do these drugs look like and smell like? In what ways can drug usage be disguised, hidden from parents? Why is it important to test my child for drug usage at home? How do I do it? How does Morgan County’s “Prescription Drug Drop-off Box” work? How can I talk to my kids about staying drug free? How can I better “connect” with my kids? What resources are available? Nov 18th - Ladies Book Group will meet to discuss the book Shattered Silence by Melissa G. Moore with M. Bridget Cook at 8:00 p.m. at Holly Zieglers home. The author, M. Bridget Cook, is a resident of Mountain Green and Holly has invited her to attend. We will also have our holiday book exchange and come prepared with a book you would like to read for next year. All are welcome!
Nov 18th - Financial Literacy Class - Held at the Mountain Green Elementary school from 6:30-7:30. This is one of a four part class taught by Zion’s bank discussing topics like: The Cost of Credit, Dangers of Identity Theft, Retirement Plans and Basic Personal Finance. The topics are still changing a bit and will be held once a month. Adults and Young Adults are invited to attend.
Nov 20th - The 4th Annual Mtn. Green Fire Station Christmas Boutique - 4:00-9:00p.m. Come make Christmas special for others in Morgan Countyby participating in a charitable donation event. TOYS for Tots or NON-PERISHABLE FOOD for the local food bank, and CASH donations are welcome! All donations benefit Morgan County.

Spotlight: The Greer Family

We are the Greer family (Billy, Diane, Brody, Jared, Kyle, Cami, and Tyler). We have lived in Mt. Green 20 years and have made many wonderful friends through out that time. Billy is currently working for the State of Utah managing computer projects. He enjoys playing soccer, golf, and skiing in his spare time. He also volunteers for the Kent Smith Park committee. I like reading, camping, and spending time with family & friends. I also like hanging out with our dogs Rusty and Libby. Our two oldest children, Brody and Jared work for the National Park Service in Zion’s Park. They love big wall climbing, river running, and mountain biking. Brody is married to a wonderful girl Rachel. Jared keeps me worried as always with his dare devil adventures. Billy does not worry!! Kyle and his wife, Esther who is an accountant and who is also equally wonderful, he is in his 3rd year of medical school in Richmond, Virginia. Like his brothers he enjoys the outdoors, rock climbing, snow boarding and fishing. Our only daughter Cami lives in Logan and is busy working on her degree in social work, and loves snowboarding . Tyler our youngest at 20 years enjoys music, snowboarding and works for Rosehill Dairy while contemplating what life awaits him. We have loved living here in this beautiful valley and realize how very fortunate and blessed we are!!

Spotlight: The Gardner Family

Hello:
We are the Gardners’, Terry and Jeneen. We have lived in beautiful Mtn. Green for 25 years. We have four children, five grandsons and a new little one on the way. Of coarse, we are hoping for a granddaughter.

Our oldest, Terra is married to Joseph Triplett and they live in West Layton. They have three boys, Nathan age 14, Jaron age 12 and Brendan age 9. Next comes Tyson who is married to Faby and they live in North Layton. They have two little boys, Jeremiah 4 and Ryan 13 months. Torrey is next , he is married to Megan and they live in Riverton, Utah. They are expecting their first at the end of March. Tami Jo our youngest, lives in Centerville and is still single.

I grew up in the Ogden area as Jeneen Saunders. Terry and I have been married for 39 years. I have taught school for 24 years, teaching Kindergarten, 1st and now 2nd at Mtn. Green Elementary. I like to travel, camp, read and garden. We have traveled to nine different countries, the Caribbean Islands and 34 states. I am known as the” survivor”, since surviving Botulism Poisoning and Breast Cancer.

Terry was born and raised in Idaho Falls and was a Claim Adjuster for 34 years. He retired eight years ago and has been substituting school for seven years. He is loving, know as “Mr. Mean”. We both adore kids. He likes to play Strategy Games, carve, play his Indian Flute, read as well as others things we like to do together. Welcome to all the new comers. We know you will love our community and valley as much as we do!

Spotlight: The Birkeland Family

We have lived in Mountain Green for almost 2 yrs now. We lived in Trappers Point while we built our home in the Cottonwoods. Lars is the Bank Manager at 1st Bank here in Mountain Green and we all love that his drive to work is 5 minutes. Lars grew up in Salt Lake and attended BYU in Provo where he played on the Baseball Team as their catcher. Kera stays at home with our four kids and grew up in Montana and part of her life in New York. She also attended BYU Provo.

Our kids are Ty 6, Elena 5, Leah 3 and Eva 2. We love doing all kinds of family activities and particularly enjoy date night. We moved to Mountain Green from Bozeman Mt. when Lars received the job at the Mountain Green bank, we love it here and enjoy the friends we have made.

Spotlight: The Nickerson Family

The Nickerson family moved into Mountain Green the summer of 2008 after 45 years in Massachusetts. I (Nell) grew up in Morgan and met Jim while he was stationed at Hill Air Force Base. After his discharge we moved to Massachusetts for “a year or two”. Our four children grew up in Massachusetts, Susan, Alan, Jill and Vaughn. All married and moved away: Susan's family is in New Jersey, Jill's family in Oregon, Vaughn's family in Riverton, and Alan and Kevin right here in Mountain Green. We have 11 grandchildren.

Jim worked as a mechanical designer and retired from Bose Corporation. I retired from Hyde Park Cooperative Bank. Alan works for Overstock in Salt Lake and Kevin is a junior at Morgan High.

Most of our family was together for Christmas last year. Jill's family came from Oregon and Kristina and Steven came from Texas.

Gardening in Mtn Green - Kelly Winterton

Last spring you probably looked with envy on your neighbor’s colorful daffodils and tulips. They were so pretty because they were the first flowers to bloom after the snow melted. You probably told yourself that “next year I’m going to have some nice early spring color in my flower beds too!”

Well, right now is the perfect time to visit the nursery or home improvement center to buy some bulbs to plant. Don’t put it off!

Blooming bulbs like daffodils and tulips are some of the most drought resistant and trouble-free things you can plant. They will never need to be watered, ever! They grow and bloom so early in the spring that they only need the moisture from the melting snow. By the time the soil dries out, they are done blooming. Talk about a win-win situation! Spotlight: The McBride Family

We are the McBride family. We live at 4043 Mountainbrook Way. Todd and Stacie were married on June 26, 2008 and moved the family to Mountain Green. Stacie and Cydney moved from Cottonwood Heights while Todd, MaKenzie, Brianna, Saedie , and Shaun moved from Morgan. There are five children. Shaun 22, MaKenzie 15, Brianna 12, Cydney 12, and Saedie 7.

Todd graduated from Weber State University with a B.S. Degree in Manufacturing Engineering and then attended Utah State University, where he received his MBA. He works at ATK as a Program Manager. He is currently working on the new Ares Vehicle with NASA.

Stacie graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. Degree in Marketing. She is a licensed Financial Advisor and she owns her own Financial Planning practice. She works from home a lot, which she enjoys, so she can be home for the kids.

Shaun got home from his mission in Honduras one year ago last month. He is attending Weber State University for a business degree and wants to join Stacie and work as a Financial Advisor. Shaun is currently working at Decade in South Ogden. He is very well known for being one of Utah’s most amazing skate boarders.

MaKenzie attends Morgan High School. She is a freshman cheerleader. She is very active with school. She is consistently on the honor roll and loves her friends.

Brianna is attending Morgan Middle School. Brianna was on the honor roll all last year. She does cheer and tumbling at the Dance Shack. She is very artistic and she loves her friends.

Cydney attends Morgan Middle School. Cydney loves to dance. She currently is dancing at the Dance Shack.

Spotlight: The Ottesen Family

The Otteson's were established in 1986. Chris and I were high school sweethearts and will be celebrating our 23rd anniversary this month. We have three beautiful children; two girls and one boy. What makes us unique is the Stork can only find our home every 11 years and in 2020 we will not be answering the door.

Fayth our oldest daughter is 22 years old and grew up as a only child but always wanted a little sister. Ten years later our son Colin came into our home and gave dad an excuse to buy all of the boy toys he never had. 11 years later we opened the door and welcomed our beautiful baby, Summer Rose.Fayth, is a “wanna have fun kinda girl”, she is the Sun Shine of our home and brings lots of fun and laughter. Fayth is intrested in becoming a famous writer, she has published four articles in the Ogden Independant.

Colin, is “wanna play,play play kinda kid”, anything outside and with wheels: biking, motorcycles, skateboarding and the newest addition, the unicycle. Colin does little wrong in our eyes and is always so helpful.

Summer Rose, is a “wanna cry, cry, cry kinda kid”. She is not much for smiling at strangers or anyone outside of her family for that matter. She cries in the morning, she cries in the evening, she will cry all night long. The Rose in her name doesn’t represent the beautiful flower, its for all those thorns. Just kidding, but sometimes we wonder.

Chris is “wanna hunt, hunt, kinda guy”, Montana, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, Alaska and Africa are his latest adventures.

Shawna is a “wanna exercise, exercise, kinda woman”, and was jogging two days before she had Summer. Oh, wait a minute, Shawna once loved to exercise now tries taking a crying baby on a walk and the closest thing to a free weight she lifts is a 22 pound baby. She loves almost every minute of being a stay at home mom.

The sign at the marker to Mountain Green reads Mountain Green the beautiful, after living here 3 years we have come to realize its not the beautly of the landscapes but the inner beauty of the people who live here. Thanks for letting the Otteson's be part of your community.
